Re: George Floyd murder and aftermath
In the past year, one of the things that I have become most certain of is that a lot of the practices that are engrained in policing are not effective. High speed chases seem to be firmly in this category. Worse, we don't even have a common understanding of what effective means or a common mental m...

Re: George Floyd murder and aftermath
It's pretty reasonable to expect a carjacker to cause imminent harm to other people in the near future. Imminently? Like, they've stolen a car and now it's reasonable to believe they will do what next? The most dangerous scenarios for imminent harm that I can think of involve fleeing in a high spee...

Whatever the opinions on the art fair...again with the continued want to deny that there are actually problems with public safety. Well, there are. It isn't "perceived". There was a movement to boycott the art fair and there would certainly have been protest. Is that "public safety&q...

I am not sure that is true. The franchise agreement certainly have restrictions on how close a new franchise can be, which is likely more protection than the drive thru ban.One side effect of the city's drive thru ban is that makes locations with existing ones extremely ultra-valuable

The permit posted in the construction office trailer says "dental office expansion."Unless something has changed really recently, the site has the same owner ("Dr. Joan World Holdings"), so they're probably just expanding.

Unfortunately, properties have changed hands at valuations that require an Apple Store or a Victoria's Secret level rent to pencil out. Except Victoria's Secret isn't a high-value renter anymore, which is why it is gone. Which isn't to say that you're wrong, just that the things evolve. Taking it f...

Re: Uptown-LynLake-Wedge - News & General Topics
On a high level, I think what's considered to be the "cool" area of the city is just changing. The change we're seeing now is Uptown to North Loop. 10 years ago, the North Loop was a fraction of what it is today; Uptown had everything. Retail cycles happen, and Uptown will likely have to ...

Re: Uptown-LynLake-Wedge - News & General Topics
Agreed. It does happen where its rent related but with the amount of empty retail on this side of uptown I think its bold to assume it can only be rent related. Given how much better lyndale is doing, I doubt rent is that much cheaper a few blocks down given that both are bustling streets. What els...

Re: Minneapolis 2021 Elections - Mayor, City Council, BET, Park Board
There's going to be a ton of money spent backing conservative candidates. The problem, like last time, is that a new glossy mailer every day doesn't really do all that much to move anyone. Those afraid of change are motivated at the moment. Progressive are going to need to overcome that with organiz...

As I sit in my office, there is maybe one (I've heard noises but not actually seen them) other person on the floor today. Didn't see anyone when I was in on Wednesday. Didn't come in yesterday. Which is to say I've been rethinking my faith that people are mostly going to start coming back to the off...

I have never even understood the purported premise of height restriction in the shoreland overlay.
lol. The wetland is located in Edina. The shoreland overlay rules are generally dumb.

Huh?To be fair, it's easy for Robbinsdale to see what a catastrophe for people in cars the Blue Line caused along Hiawatha and think a repeat could happen on Bottineau. Maybe the next thing is to do a traffic study.

Looks like the Dayton's Project isn't in compliance with the terms of their loan. Their lender is moving to foreclosure because they aren't meeting their agreed upon leasing requirements. https://finance-commerce.com/2021/06/daytons-developer-sues-debt-holder/ Based only on that write up, it seems ...

I thought we decided that the cracks in the building pre-dated the Theater Garage construction?
Either way, this is a replacement for the older apartment buildings that were unfortunately damaged by the Theater Garage building construction.

The last time he made headlines doing this was for telling activists that he wasn't in favor of defunding police. He was booed in person and panned online for this at the time, even though in hindsight this was probably the right position. I can see why he'd be hesitant to wade into anything like t...

I think the speedway idea is great! They could build a new building for a historical center on the events of that area. This is more long term planning of the area but still. It's a good idea and the kind of thing the mayor (and others) should have been talking to the activities about. Not that I k...

I'm usually only there briefly, but young and white doesn't describe the majority of the people I've seen there on the many times I've been through. That was mostly in reference to all the young white people I see there. The ones turning away journalists, getting in people's faces, etc.
