Re: Street, Road and Highway Projects

Another reason why 55 south of the river won't happen: it has fairly light volumes compared to other arterials in the Metro. I would expect far more priority to be placed on other highways.

Re: Street, Road and Highway Projects

Multiway boulevard on the list? Wishful thinking. How far away is the removal of the last couple of lights on 62 at 494 in Eden Prairie? Likely decades, if ever. MnDOT considered it for when they widened 494 but decided against doing so due to cost and ROW impacts. Those metrics have not changed si...

Re: Street, Road and Highway Projects

For the record, the study is also going to look at lower-cost, at-grade solutions for intersections along those routes. It's not looking purely at grade separation or interchanges, although it will prioritize which existing intersections should eventually be grade separated.

Re: Street, Road and Highway Projects

Any speculation on ever seeing new freeway within the 494/694 beltway?
Not mentioned yet is the rest of the Hwy 36 conversion west of 694 to freeway. And this one's actually on the books.

Re: Street, Road and Highway Projects

Ever notice how TH7 comes to a screeching halt at Lake Street? It would have linked TH 7 through Kenilworth to downtown. Would've done more than that. I've discovered in the past that the "Southwest Arterial" was actually separate from Hwy 7 and proposals for Hwy 7. For awhile from the la...

Re: Amtrak Empire Builder and Intercity Rail to Chicago

Regarding the Builder's better-than-previously time performance, it's likely that a lot of that is due to decreased Bakken oil field activity given the obscenely low price of oil. Though some of the improvement may be due to possible completion of double-tracking projects along the line. I don't kno...

This is nothing new. Lake Elmo has basically butted heads with the Met Council for decades...trying to limit development as much as they can. They aspire to be like North Oaks.

Re: Freight Rail News and Happenings

I recall a fair bit of double-tracking under construction on both sides of Williston when I took the Empire Builder this summer. Also recall some double-tracking near Big Lake or Becker.

Re: Buses vs Rail and Cars vs Transit

Don't recall offhand. Hogan spread the money (which IIRC amounted to about $800M) around the state a bit. There were some suburban projects funded, but also some high-profile (and expensive) projects on the Eastern Shore. What was very notable was that Baltimore County (the suburban county that surr...

Funds diverted to rural roads.
FTFY, since I have some knowledge of the situation in Maryland.

And will the recent redecking of the Hwy 5 (Fort Road) Bridge play into it? Was that a Chapter 152 project?
Yes it was.

Re: Northern Lights Express

Are there any tracks at all north of Two Harbors that could be used by NSSR to provide connecting service? Not really, and definitely not along the lake. The NSSR does tie into the CN tracks that head inland, but there's nothing along the shore, nor is there a direct wye connection to the rail line...

Re: Orange Line (35W BRT) & Lake St Transit Access Project

I did not realize that the Lake St. transit portion is not yet funded. This was part of the discussion last month...according to the Henn Co engineer (who I happen to know), they're about $25 million short. And the primary reason why the freeway part is funded is because 2 of the bridges north of L...

Re: Rush Line Corridor (Alternatives Analysis)

Seems like you could get across the train tracks either above or below (halfway across Kellogg Bridge for example, or tunneling underneath) then cross *underneath* I-94 under the existing bridge between the active RR tracks and the Gateway trail. Then enter the hillside underneath the intersection ...

Re: Rush Line Corridor (Alternatives Analysis)

This seems to come up as a perennial discussion point...routing an LRT line along Payne Ave. That said, I took a look at the geometry of Tiller's new alignment options. In short, it still won't work. The option to bridge over 94 to the southeast then take the Kellogg Bridge (the green line on his Go...

...which is an interesting thing to say since vehicle registration fees in Minnesota are Constitutionally dedicated to roads. And 40% of the MVST now, too. Sure, they're not paying gas tax, but to suggest electric cars aren't contributing ANYTHING is dubious and just plain false. And if he's talking...

Re: Street, Road and Highway Projects

Unless they built a loop to southbound I-35, which could keep the existing bridge. Unless you eliminated the shoulders under the bridge (NOT recommended), a loop would require bridge replacement anyway to fit in the acceleration lane, because of where the bridge piers are located. Plymouth confirm ...
