Re: United Properties / Four Seasons "Gateway" Project (Nicollet Hotel Block)

Huh. Ryan can [theoretically] do underground parking here, but Opus can't pull it off one block kitty-corner to the SE. I seem to recall a string of comments on this forum related to a very large cavern under this block and/or the one on which Marq4 and the new Xcel building sit. The history was pr...

Re: North Loop Neighborhood

Heh, heh, amiller. Good catch. After I posted, I thought about editing to remove the "absolute" as well as the "great" before "great sense at the macro level". Using superlatives doesn't make it so. But it's just a forum thread, right? In any case, I agree with you abou...

Re: North Loop Neighborhood

No, I'm not kidding. I really want to know, what's the ratio between teardowns and "reuse after rents rise high enough?" Keep it post-1980 to avoid the Urban Renewal B.S. :) I know this is more complicated than it sounds. Buildings are often torn down because they're functionally obsolete...

Re: 420 E Hennepin Ave

I'm not unhappy about this at all. I like the shape and more cohesive use of materials, that said if it's cement board, that's upsetting, but a cream brick would look nice. I like the way the balconies are incorporated into the structure as well. Especially at the Hennepin and central angle. I agre...

I'm late to this thread, but at the risk of repeating what might have appeared earlier, I'll put in a Hurrah! for a planned community on the site of a former airport in Austin, TX. It's beautiful, walkable, and lively: http://www.muelleraustin.com/about/ http://www.npr.org/2015/02/12/385474414/with-...

You can get the 13 dollar yuppie burger for 10 bucks with a hamms during happy hour at nightingale! And plenty of good burgers for around 10 if you look around. If you have fallen victim to red cow, that's on you. Can we get back to the development at hand? Y'all can start a burger inflation convo ...

Hmm. I wonder why that could be?

PS: Just in case iit needs to be said, this is supposed to be lighthearted. I'm not really saying that drivers coming from Surly are drunk.

Re: Minneapolis Skyway System

Whatever the arguments pro and con, closing the skyways now is impossible. The skyways are lined with businesses that hold leases and have invested a great deal in building out their locations. Shutting down the skyways that generate their foot traffic would generate a couple of nightmares' worth of...

Re: Downtown Minneapolis General Topics & Development Map

I recall that new workforce housing is planned for the First Covenant Church parking lot, across from US Bank Stadium. Part of the financing deal, if I remember correctly, was that the housing would be done by the time of the Super Bowl and used initially as lodging for people associated with the ev...

Re: Downtown Minneapolis Macy's Building

Macy's might be pulling our legs on this clearance thing. I need a new pair of Levi's, so I checked to see how the sale might help out. The jeans (and everything else) were marked up to the original price before applying the discount. In the case of a pair of 501 Levis, that means 20% off of $63 som...

The Depot is planning to extend its event center into the portion of the train shed used for parking:

Re: Minneapolis Armory

Unless I'm viewing the renderings incorrectly, it appears that Swervo is planning to brick in all the existing windows on the east and west sides and then build an addition on the east side that covers a portion of the historic facade and makes little attempt to fit with the WPA style. How this flie...

Re: Kraus-Anderson Offices, HQ Apartments, Finnegans Brewery & Hotel - 9th St S/5th Ave S

Aberdeen Court is the name of a senior community run in St. Paul by Catholic Charities. Given the use of this same name, my guess is that Aberdeen Flats would be the apartments planned to replace the Finance & Commerce Building on 7th next to Catholic Charities.

Two other buildings of similar size were even more severely damaged by fire and are still with us: the ones housing Glueks and Maxwell's bars. May the fate of the Oakland Apartments be equally kind!

Re: City of Minneapolis Offices Consolidation

I keep a mental folder of the most awful buildings in downtown Minneapolis. I'm thinking of those buildings that go beyond unfortunate (City Center, Centre Village, the Metro Apartments at 90 South Ninth) and enter the realm of repellent, the ones that pedestrians cross a street to avoid. These eyes...

Re: Stadium LRT Station, Ped Bridge & Plaza (MSFA block)

What bothers me about this plaza more than the bridge and the jumble around the light rail stop is the overwhelming expanse of concrete between the stadium and the Commons. It's brutally hot and oppressive on steamy summer days, and I imagine it being equally miserable during cold, windy, winter day...

Re: North Loop Neighborhood

I can absolutely assure you that the owner of In the Loop has nothing to do with the franchisee owner of North Loop Dunn Bros. Also, once all expenses are accounted for, the average profit margin for a coffee shop is something like 3-5% There are a lot more costs than that of the coffee beans!
