Re: Hopkins - General Topics
I thought it was odd that neither the Strib nor BizJournal article mentioned where they were relocating employees from- most articles usually note that. The Richfield locations seem most likely, and this is therefore probably a wash from a future transit access perspective given the Orange Line stop.

Re: Minneapolis Mayoral Election 2017
The question really is how do NLP's seconds break? I'd think Hodges and Dehn both do well, but how well relative to each others makes the difference as to which is eliminated next, or whether Hoch is. Yeah, and the other thing is its easy (for me anyway) to overweight generalizing. Pounds supports ...

Re: Hopkins - General Topics
Boy I'd like to say this is an okay consolidation from a transit-accessibility perspective given SWLRT, but that's a long 3700 foot walk from the Blake Road station (4200' to the Hopkins platform).

Re: Bicycle Infrastructure
To be clear, I wasn't opposed to the work done on Blaisdell. In most cases south of 31st, one lane is enough. But the situation at 35th and 36th is markedly worse than it was previously, and it extends for a much longer period of the day. And the work they're about to start on 35W is going to exace...

Re: Bicycle Infrastructure
You seem to be dismissing out of hand the large jumps in facility usage even within weeks of implementation, let alone after a full year. Since most restriping for bike lanes happens late summer or even well into the fall, many casual cyclists are not taking as many trips (yes, it's true, some peopl...

Re: 44th & France - Edina/Minneapolis
It's an effective scare tactic because nobody is actually pushing for this node to look like Excelsior & Grand. But the reality is that's what the vision for any node like this around Minneapolis or Edina should be. That the draft SAP envisions 2-3 story buildings a parcel off France Ave is a ma...

Re: Weyerhaueser site redevelopment - 700 Emerald St
I might break from those who think the street presence isn't great. Maybe the renderings are masking how awful the materials might be, but more important to me is the somewhat neat addition of the stacked balconies along all elevations, with the lowest of each also being an entrance. Feels somewhat ...

Re: Southwest LRT (Green Line Extension)
"Pushing." But yes, something like that line is not on any long-long-range plans with the Met Council. I actually think a SWLRT + Midtown makes an additional link like that more valuable (especially if it continued north into NE Mpls and beyond, a woefully under-served area on our regional...

Re: LynLake Municipal Lot Redevelopment
I think in general these businesses are under-valuing how neighborhood changes (population increase, shift in income, etc) and even shift in how people are willing to get around over the past 10 years has made *directly adjacent* parking less necessary for them. What percent of people visiting LynLa...

Re: Southwest LRT (Green Line Extension)
I'll just note that in my experience reading papers and blogs, the Transit Cost Penalty in America vs other nations is much higher than the road cost penalty. There are some things that are shared/similar (e.g. other nations who are better at tunneling, which is rarer for roads). But the requirement...

Re: Southwest LRT (Green Line Extension)
Here is a $3 billion dollar bridge and tunnel under a damn sea that serves cars and trains between two different countries with all their different requirements, and they were able to finish it in roughly 20-30 years less than SWLRT when you include total time from serious planning efforts (studies,...

Re: Southwest LRT (Green Line Extension)
Walls are generally bad in cities, etc. but 1) sometimes we need to accept some bad urban design for good overall outcomes, 2) this wall isn't even bad and it's a case study in poor PR management, and 3) the fact that this got such negative press while urban freeways continue to erect much larger an...

Oh wow... I thought the rendering they showed looked like the complete shell of the building would remain. That's a bit shocking. But, I lived in both the north and south sides of Pio so I'm good on the memory/preservation front

Yeah, I hear this site is p good for a tower, maybe Ackerberg is willing to sell. In all seriousness, there are actually very *few* sites, even within Minneapolis, where something like the dual tower or single taller tower proposed in Edina would receive little to no pushback. Alatus and Doran are f...

It was granted a CUP for 3 stories, not 4 as requested. The video of the CPC meeting isn't up on YouTube yet, but I heard there was a bit of typical drama. No word on if the developer will appeal the decision, or even if neighbors will appeal it in the other direction.

That was, and is, a nice little bit of napkin math. A few issues I had with it then/now: - This assumes an immediate ramp up to 50k employees, which will definitely not be the case. It may take 10-20 years before they hire that many people (if ever, as you note by assuming we take them at their word...

Hi, yes, I'd like to be paid just half of whatever Kimley Horn was to tell Edina's City Council that pushing for a rail project like this as one city - full of wealthy white people - of many other cities that instituted the gag rule was politically unpopular and fraught with challenges. Kimley Horn ...

Re: Zoning in Minneapolis
That's pretty rare. Most sidewalks on residential blocks actually end 1-2 feet short of the public ROW. And while that may not be super relevant to new construction, we can certainly verify whether the building abuts the lot line from the plans they submitted to the city.
