Re: Red Line (Cedar Avenue BRT)

Huh, ridership shouldn't be a primary metric of a transit agency? The Red Line cost $115 million to build in 2013 dollars and now has fewer than 350 riders per day. There's got to be some connections to spending millions of dollars and the number of people who will ride the service. Maybe this regi...

Re: Red Line (Cedar Avenue BRT)

Oh, ok, then MVTA shouldn't exist. Agreed, but for other reasons. Ridership is not the primary metric for a transit agency. The Twin Cities have a sprawling metro that needs coverage. There are still transit dependent people, and jobs that people want to access in Dakota County. An hourly bus does ...

Re: Red Line (Cedar Avenue BRT)

The Red Line had the second most ridership of any MVTA route in 2021. Infill stations at Palomino, and Cliff, and extending it North to Downtown while adding a station on 66th street in Richfield would make so much sense. It needs better connecting service, but putting higher frequency on one of the...

Re: Blue Line Extension - Bottineau LRT

There's a maintenance facility being planned beyond the end of the line at Oak Grove which would have to be relocated. It also looks like Oak Grove is being planned as something analogous to Bloomington's South Loop with higher density housing. Yes, Brooklyn Park has had plans on really densifying ...

Re: Suburban Transit (Opt-out Services Providers)

It's probably time to revive the Orange Line Extension, and connect it down to the Burnsville Center area at least. Definitely, it would make connections easier system wide. I wish they would've planned from the beginning to extend the BRT down Nicollet ave past Burnsville City Hall, Fairview Ridge...

https://www.mvta.com/news-items/winterservicechange/ MVTA winter service changes include Route 495 service to MSP Airport Terminal 1 and extension of the Orange Link to Blackhawk Park & Ride and Apple Valley Transit Station. The Orange Link will also go from 30 minute frequency to 60 minute fre...

Re: Downtown Minneapolis - News & General Topics

I went to a downtown panel discussion last week that Goodman and Frey spoke at. Among other things one of Goodman's parting desires was to "tear down that damn post office ramp" and Frey echoed it too. I didn't know it was such a priority at the city - good to see.
Which ramp?

Re: Road Geek Topics

While nothing beats reconstructing roads, I think that widely decreasing speed limits in residential areas might lead (over time) to culture shifts in the state that will save lives. As would, I hope, making information about crash outcomes at different speeds something that every license applicant...

Re: Better Bus Routes - Metro Transit

My annoying fantasy transit idea connecting Southside and NE Minneapolis is a new LRT service to NE (and eventually Rosedale) using the Blue Line's existing Hiawatha trackage, then running up 35W to Rosedale (some sections in the middle of 35W, some alongside). The Blue Line running right over 35W,...

Re: Better Bus Routes - Metro Transit

I get the complaint about how many bus routes flow through downtown but what's the route from north to south that doesn't as least graze the edge of DT? Lowry Hill, the Sculpture Garden & 394 force anything west of Lyndale on to Lyndale. On the east you have the river, I guess you could use Ced...

Re: Better Bus Routes - Metro Transit

I think bringing back the 27 and extending to the North Side via Lyndale and Dunwoody/Van White could be a pretty interesting concept. On the east side it's a little bit trickier but perhaps something on 2nd or Washington then along 4th/University to Jones/Eddy Hall, West Bank, Cedar, Minnehaha to ...

Re: Fare-Free Transit

If equity is the reasoning then we should just expand the reduced fare program. I feel like handing out free bus passes to everyone in the 7 county area under a certain household income would be a good option as well before going all fare free I want to see what the operations benefits would be of ...

Re: Blue Line Extension - Bottineau LRT

The Plymouth & Washington station supports the continued redevelopment of the North Loop. The area around Lyndale & Plymouth is mostly freeway land and the rest is unlikely to be redeveloped. 21st is superior to Broadway because whatever is left of the business community there would never s...

Re: Blue Line Extension - Bottineau LRT

Community Engagement on this project has given us: A better alignment avoiding Lyndale A transitway on 10th ave and 21st (The 21st one is a huge test case for future residential transitways that could open up a lot of new possibilities for rail in the future). An added station by Cub on Broadway All...

Re: Blue Line Extension - Bottineau LRT

For anyone who attended - any new information presented? Not really. I think they moved the light rail alignment from the southside of 10th to the northside of 10th? But that's it. Just a lot of NIMBY fighting. I talked with the director of the West Broadway Business and Area Coalition last night t...

Re: Suburban Transit (Opt-out Services Providers)

Maple Grove, Plymouth, and Southwest Transit's dial-a-rides go outside of their service areas to make connections to Metro Transit and everyone is allowed to ride, not just residents of their respective cities. Yankee Doodle and Pilot Knob have very limited walksheds and are really low density. The...
