Re: Green Line Extension - Southwest LRT

If the task at hand is building a train tunnel through a fen it would seem daft to proceed without hiring a Dutch engineering firm. I would think that they do this on a daily basis.

Or perhaps I'm overestimating the Dutch?

Re: Fiber Internet and TV Services, Cord Cutting

Last fall when Centerpoint was replacing the west 27th street gas main near Lyndale they often had an idling police car nearby. That must add a lot of cost.

I really feel like I'm living in a 3rd world sh*thole country after watching this Deutsche Bahn video which was linked in the comments.

Re: Target Center Renovation

BigIdeasGuy, I think you've correctly identified the problem here, which is that the fickle winds of professional sports shift quickly and decisively. So how do we hedge against the fairly likely possibility that a new fad will sweep the nation three years after the new arena is built, rendering it ...

Re: Target Center Renovation

That's actually a great location for HERC because the dioxins and PM2.5 go right over our heads and land on the suburbs. Wasn't that the point of putting it there?

Re: Street, Road and Highway Projects

The incessant roar of planes overhead impacts my experience of Lake Nokomis about 10x more than anything going on with cars and roads.

Re: Minneapolis Population / Density - General Discussion

Yes, I’m an inline skater, and despite enjoying Philly a lot, the park trails here were infinitely better for moving along on wheels. Philly often became a sort of obstacle course, even along the Schuykill River. Where the heck do you go to find more than several blocks worth of skateable trail in ...

It really is amazing how some people see the idling police car as threatening, and some see it as reassuring.

Re: Lyndale 4-3 Conversion and Bryant Avenue Reconstruction

Is it premature to consider how removing the obstruction from Nicollet would affect Lyndale?

Re: Southwest LRT (Green Line Extension)

Never too late to add a "temporary" track from West Lake Station to Uptown TC on Midtown Greenway, and voila, we have direct access to B and E Lines.
You have my vote, sir.

Re: Street, Road and Highway Projects

I've crossed Lyndale on foot and bicycle well over a thousand times without incident in the decades long time I've lived close to it. Maybe that's my one superpower. I do always cross with my smartphone in my pocket rather than in my hand, however. A couple of days ago I saw a guy out in a traffic l...

Re: Future of Graco campus - St. Anthony West

In Tokyo the industrial parks are probably served by high speed trains. Here, ownership of a dependable late model vehicle (preferably an SUV for winter driving) is the price of admission to access the economic opportunities out on the exurban fringe.

Re: Future of Graco campus - St. Anthony West

Yes, of course it's going to happen because everybody seems to think that the proper place for factories is way out in the cornfields. Nobody is challenging this assumption, it's like manifest destiny. This is why Minneapolis continues to bifurcate into the haves and have nots. I've actually worked ...

They're not closing anytime soon, they're thriving and profitable constructing actual physical objects near the heart of a major city. They are literally doing the impossible, and doing it with style. If they left, how could we replace the economic and social benefit of that blue collar payroll? It ...

Re: Future of Graco campus - St. Anthony West

It's relatively small and fairly isolated from other areas of the city guided for production/industrial uses. I don't think re-designating this area away from production harms efforts to preserve and promote current and future production jobs in other parts of the city. "I love factories. Fact...

Re: Future of Graco campus - St. Anthony West

Be great if some sort of density could include industrial jobs as well somehow. I like density and housing and offices, but these places also have good jobs. Metal Matic Inc also has a large space near the river, unlike Graco theirs is a bit rundown. Yes, this does beg the question of what the prop...

Re: Twin Cities' National and Global Image

The cruel irony of this is that the current reform efforts are as unlikely to bring lasting change as the attempts 20 years ago. A year from now the daily operations of the MPD will be indistinguishable from the pre- George Floyd era.

In this market? If older white residents leave, younger ones will be chomping at the bit to buy their houses sight unseen.
I would love to see the next generation come in and start building equity, but I fear they'll be competing against large property management companies.

I'm kind of curious where the snow will go now. Trucked out to a far suburb?
