Re: MSP Airport

Long-haul flights probably only work between the largest world cities, like HK to Chicago is a nearly a 15hr flight but there is probably enough demand in Chicago to keep it a nonstop, plus it can used as a transfer point for people in other Midwestern or even East Coast cities. A Detroit-Hong Kong ...

Re: MSP Airport

I think that #4 means that business travelers simply like how the airport looks/feels. There are still a lot of airports that feel crowded and old, EWR, LGA, LAX, CLE, SEA all come to mind as airports that still need major modernizations. IMO, DEN, IAD, SFO, IAH, DET, ORD are our nicer airports Tru...

Re: MSP Airport

After reading this article and seeing Air France come to MSP, hopefully that means Korean Air and Lufthansa can come here within the next couple of years. Seeing us as the #4 airport for business travelers is impressive given the top 3 are primary international gateways, while I would consider MSP m...

Re: Super Talls

If most of Central was built out, 1-2 800-900' towers and a 1000' tower would be nice to see.

Something like on the scale of the Nicollet (about 650' tall) or Calgary's new skyscrapers would be good within this decade.

Re: Super Talls

Vancouver and San Francisco do not have supertalls and their skylines are world-famous. SF may be getting one (Transbay development), but their downtown is one of the strongest and largest in the nation even without a supertall. A super-tall does not define whether a skyline is world class or not. C...

Re: Super Talls

I would like to see an expansion of the downtown core eastward, from 1-2 more blocks of 30-50 story towers, 10-20 story mixed-use towers around the stadium area, and then 6-10 story apartments near 35W. Supertalls are awesome, but they aren't required to have a world-class skyline.

Re: Northstar

I never expected it to be for suburb-to-suburb travel, but at least if they build townhomes, they should be closer to the rail stations. Hopefully it gets expanded for St. Cloud. If they do actually expand, they should fix up the Amtrak station and keep East St. Cloud (existing Link bus station) as ...

Re: Northstar

Yeah Ramsey's sprawl is pretty atrocious with rural residential areas dominating the land use in the exurb. The townhomes located near the Ramsey and Bunker Lake Blvd intersection could have been built closer to the town center, so at least there would be people within a very close walking distance ...

Re: Northstar

I've heard people whine about spending on light rail is wasteful spending, but that area in Ramsey is what I call wasteful spending. I don't get why nearly every mid-sized to large exurb/suburb has some sort of pipe dream on newer developments. Is anything actually going to get built there? Why even...

Re: 222 & Whole Foods - (222 Hennepin Avenue)

It's not that bad, but the quality of the materials seems to make people talk in this thread. Some wanted it to be taller, and some want it to be architecturally significant. I wouldn't call it suburban like a couple people, but the architectural design seems similar to other developments of this ma...

Re: General Suburb News

The lot is surrounded by a bunch of townhomes and a farm that will probably be redeveloped into McMansions anyway, I don't know why local citizens really care there is going to be an apartment complex there. A place with $1,100-1,500/month rents is not going to bring in crime, if anything it will fu...

Re: 4Marq - (400 Marquette Avenue)

They could always build a skyscraper over 500-600 ft on one of the parking lots near Campbell Mithun or on a lot in DT East close to the core. I kind of always wanted the DT Core to expand a couple blocks eastward towards Portland or Park with 30-50 story towers, and then gradually have 10-25 story ...

Re: Northstar

My guess about the Elk River station location is that they probably did not want to put it downtown, where it could mess up future ROW for a freeway upgrade or lane expansion of Highway 10 in the city. I remember seeing documents showing either a 6-lane expressway or 4-lane freeway upgrade a couple ...

Re: Interstate 94

If they add another lane to 94, I would want it to be a MNPass lane or just a shoulder lane that is just open for when accidents happen or congestion. Otherwise they can just keep improving the rural freeways by upgrading from asphalt to concrete like on 35.

Re: Townhouses 49th and Vernon in Edina (Hunt Associates)

This development is surrounded by some of the wealthiest neighborhoods in the Twin Cities. I guess a 3000 square feet townhome is living very simple. ;) I had to do a field study last year just west of this location, and I am not surprised that a higher-density project didn't pull through. Given In...

Re: Downtown Retail News

Given that high-end retail seems to keep leaving Minneapolis, should they focus on retailers that upper-middle income residents would go to? With the Nic on Fifth and the possiblity of 4Marq being built literally across the street, could that mean brands like Lacoste or Polo Ralph Lauren could have ...

Re: Smaller Scale High Density Housing.

Modern Rowhouses in Vancouver's Oakridge Neighbourhood It would be neat to see something like this on smaller parcels as an alternative to superblocks. These could work well on streets that are 1-2 blocks away from arterial streets or transitways and seem to mix in better with the single-family hou...

Re: Orange Line (35W BRT)

I think Mdcastle is talking about the auxiliary lane planned between 61 and English Street. It might cause problems given some MN drivers don't know to merge properly, but it's not as bad as a weave compared to 36's cloverleaf interchanges.

Re: Super Talls

If they built a supertall with that similar design here, it would have be called or at least nicknamed the "Rocketship".
