This is supposed to be a bad example? I quite like the large signage in downtown st. paul, both the new as well as the historic. Their most iconic building is famous for a big light-up 1st on top. Look back to the turn of the century cities urbanists love and you'll see huge signs all over the place.Again see St. PAul for what you can get. Companies don't want small signs. If they are to invest they want big very visible signs. That is what happened in St. Paul so that they could keep office tenants in buildings.

If you live on the 35th floor and your bedroom windows are in full light all day long by sunlight and the signs light at night, you might not be so happy. This was an issues that arose in St. Paul a few years ago about leaving the signs on all night long. Just letting you know what to expect if you are planning on residential towers in your downtown. I prefer the accent lighting much more myself. Some of the older historic signs are fine. But the huge one like the Bremer sign in St. Paul is where the problems are. This is supposed to be a bad example? You're making it sound like Minneapolis is completely dark at night...
I think having lit signs on buildings would hardly make much of a difference.

It's interesting that people's opinions on this vary so widely.
In my eyes, very few of the top-tier skylines have prominent signage. Think NYC, Chicago, etc. The architecture itself is the most prominent and defining feature. Allowing a hodge-podge of signage very rarely improves the aesthetics of a skyline.

U.S. Bankapolis.

I'm just stating what has been a problem with the mega signs in St. Paul. MPLS is far from dark. There are lights that compliment the architect and not a tenant. You're making it sound like Minneapolis is completely dark at night...

Re: Downtown East - Wells Fargo / Radisson Red / Edition Apt
Signage usually lacks any relationship to the architecture- stuck on like a temporary tattoo. TRUMP - I admire the Chicago building very much but the signage just looks gaudy. Feels cheap like Vegas to me. Signage can be done well, but rarely is.
But to be contrarian, I really like all the signage in Hong Kong, because I feel like it is part of the city's signature. At night, the signs are the heart beat of the city (but during the day, the same signs look like ugly overgrown billboards).

Can somebody explain these weird double curbs at Portland & 4th?
Re: Downtown East - Wells Fargo / Radisson Red / Edition Apt
It's for the curb-protected bike lane (the darker material at the center top). Very interested to see how they mark it.

Very nice, Grant -- as always. I especially like the way you captured the arrival of the Vogon Constructor Fleet in the top one!

Phone camera is no where near the quality of my Nikon, but it did the job!
And yes I have no idea how that didn't make the new yesterday.

I love the look of illuminated signage with accent lighting. I esp like the wells fargo and 1st bank signs in SP. But heres the magical singapore banking district off Marina Bay with lit signage
Re: Downtown East - Wells Fargo / Radisson Red / Edition Apt
To me there is a difference between illuminating the architecture and sticking a gaudy paste on sign to the top or side.
Re: Downtown East - Wells Fargo / Radisson Red / Edition Apt
Agreed - Light up architectural features!
Re: Downtown East - Wells Fargo / Radisson Red / Edition Apt
Just got an email from the DMNA saying that Ryan will be presenting plans for "513 S. 3rd Street, a 4-story office tower adjacent to the Downtown East Wells Fargo development" on December 2nd. I'm hoping someone can attend and ask about their definition of "tower".

That's EXACTLY what I was thinking... It's a tower, he's just laying down.

Does anyone remember a book or series of books where there was a new school built but the builder flipped the plans 90 degrees so instead of a 1 story school with 40 classrooms they got a 40 story building with a classroom on each floor? This is like that, in reverse.
