A couple nice to haves in the neighborhood would be a proper bakery and an ice cream shop. Can you imagine the lines if Sebastian Joe's opened a NL location?

I've lived in the NL for 8 years now and I've honestly never needed a bank. It looks like we're getting a clinic and pharmacy, which will be great...

My wife and I were just talking about how they could really use a bakery...and you're right about a bank, I normally only go in a couple times a year (mainly to turn in change or get large amounts of cash for vacation). And ice cream shop would be great...and I hate to say this (and most people would probably say NO), but a fast food joint would be good (although it needs to "blend in" nicely)...there's a lot of times where we just want fast chicken or tacos, etc. and end up going up to Broadway.

A question for those of you familiar with the economics of Xcel and other utilities: why would Xcel not have taken advantage of 6th Avenue being dug up to bury power lines along this stretch?

I can't remember where I read about it but from what I recall the costs were quite high to add to the project.

As I understand it, Xcel doesn't proactively bury existing overhead lines. They're buried if and only if someone else (property owner, city, etc.) is willing to foot the bill.

For example, take a look just at bit further down 6th, where the line was buried to go under the viaduct, then popped back up afterwards. When District 600 was built, they paid to have the line buried on their property, but Fulton didn't, so there's an overhead section only two spans long.

Most ridiculous is along the Green Line on campus, where there are two poles not too far away from each other where wire comes out of the ground up to the top of the pole then connects to the building. Thinking about it, I bet those both go away because they connect to buildings that are getting torn down for the new 26 story tower.

What happened there was the building owner did not want to or was unable to pay to have the customer owned portion of the service connection changed to accommodate an undground service.

The power company can't and won't work on things it doesn't own. That work has to be done by a licensed electrician.

Eric Best did a story about the plans to renovate the Gardner Hardware building.
Rogers expects their purchase agreement to go through in January. Saturday has already submitted plans to the Heritage Preservation Commission and hopes to be on its agenda in February.

AWH Architects is handling the project’s design.

Rogers hopes to begin a six-month construction April 1.

The architect on the office buildout is Minneapolis-based Gensler.
Heh. [Emphasis mine.]

I think they just mean the Minneapolis-based office of Gensler. That's how I read it, anyways.

Yes, I'm sure that's what they meant. But it's like me saying that I ate lunch at Minneapolis-based McDonald's.

If it's a franchise... isn't that kind of true?

I'm a distribution designer for Xcel Energy and was just on site at 314 6th Ave N. They are asking for temp power and excavation has been well under way.

Wow, I didn't realize this project has 4 retail bays. With the reconstruction of 6th and the sale/renovation of the Duffey buildings this could become a surprise retail corridor!

We let a project in the North Loop get to actual construction without a dedicated thread? We're slacking.
