Mentioned at the very end of that article is that they have a contract with Xcel to produce power, once that expires (in 2018?) they can look at providing more steam.

A 1,600-foot steam line, constructed as a joint venture between Hennepin County and NRG Energy Center, Minneapolis, supplies steam produced at the Hennepin Energy Recovery Center (HERC) to NRG Energy Center's downtown district heating system and Target Field.

The steam line supplies the equivalent annual natural gas needs of 1,500 households to downtown Minneapolis and Target Field.

How does the steam line work?

Solid waste, which is considered a renewable source of energy, is burned at HERC to produce high-pressure steam. Most of this steam is used to turn a turbine that produces electricity. A portion of the steam is diverted to the steam line that connects with the NRG Energy Center’s downtown district heating system.

So is Inbound Brewco part of Lucid in some way? Sorry if it's a dumb question...I don't know all the different brew pub relationships, just happen to live next door to the old Tubs location.

Thanks!

Why does the area indicated by google maps as the "North Loop" include very little of the territory that I think of as the north loop?

Most likely because the area we think of as part of the NL is called the Warehouse District. I think because both the NL and Warehouse district are adjoining and both have residential and industrial mix we just tend to lump the 2 together to save some confusion. If someone has a better answer I'd like to hear it and learn something if there is another reason.

The North Loop Neighborhood per the City is bound by (clockwise starting from noon) the River, Hennepin, Washington, 394, 94, and Plymouth. It's roughly the same as combining google's versions of the North Loop and Warehouse District.

Warehouse District, much like Uptown, is not a "real" neighborhood, at least in any officially recognized sense: http://www.ci.minneapolis.mn.us/www/gro ... 264339.pdf

There is apparently still a "Warehouse District Business Association" http://mplswarehouse.com/ which includes properties that lie in "Downtown West" and in "North Loop"

That's all good news....would really love it if the IoT sector took off here in the TCs and made its stomping grounds North and West Loop

I'm pretty sure the term North Loop was created sometime within the last decade and a half. For the first decade I lived in the Twin Cities I never heard it called anything else besides the Warehouse District. It sounds like the sort of made up neighborhood name that real estate marketing people started inventing in the late '90s. I've always hated the name but maybe that is just me.

I'll agree with all that you said. When I started to hear the term North Loop was when the city and county and other speculators were looking for homes for stadiums. All that empty space that would be cheap and pretty much ready for construction, no demolition needed. Once the Twins started construction the NL got used a lot. But you are pretty much right on the origins of the North Loop, real estate marketing.

FWIW, the North Loop Neighborhood Association says the name came from a trolley line that ran in the area. I don't know the history of that and don't really care one way or the other, but it seems there's at least a claim of some historical basis for the name. I can understand the desire to differentiate it from "Warehouse District" because so many cities have some version of that.

I noticed the other day that there are studs going in on the second floor of the Western Container building, and here's a crappy pic (although I guess it's possible they've been there for a while and I hadn't noticed).

The work has picked up in this in the past few weeks, though - seems like a lot of basement excavations going on, maybe for some underground parking? Or structural stuff... The 2x4 frames that were there to hold the plastic have also been removed from a few of the windows.

Oh, so this is new news?

Arctic Cat is moving their headquarters here - so not apartments anymore!

That's really cool. Maybe they realize the less sprawl, the more room there is to get out on a snow mobile!

A vote of confidence for the neighborhood from SouthWest Transit:

"The North Loop District of Minneapolis growing more and more by the day. As such, all express routes currently terminating and starting in Downtown will now extend down Washington Ave in order to better serve the booming North Loop District."

http://swtransit.org/wp-content/uploads ... Packet.pdf (page 65)

I'm thinking maybe to 7th Ave? The Freehouse parking lot could make a decent layover point.

So... will North Loop residents be able to "reverse commute" into downtown Minneapolis on SW Transit buses?

Maybe Metro Transit can follow that lead and extend the Downtown Zone farther into the NL...
