New restaurant moving in next to Borough. Surprised this is opening this month. Maybe I just haven't noticed any construction going on in that space.

Honestly? My property tax assessment just went up 30% and these are matters that concern these clowns?

"My property tax assessment just went up 30%"

Really?! Is that actually true?

In related efforts, we're going to require that the twins offer sunglasses for everyone attending so that their eyes have the appropriate level of shading.

Can we preemptively add this law to dayton's "unsession" agenda, as this is one of the most ridiculous proposals I've ever seen. I'm about as liberal as I'm assuming most people on this site are, but this is just an insane over stepping over government.

This is ridiculous but I do have to say the music in Famous Dave's is so loud that I would never eat there when they have live music.

Sorry for off-topic but yes. Haven't gotten the new property tax statement but got the new assessment and it's up about that. Talked to the assessor and his response was that they were "playing catch-up" now that the market is back (you sure took your time dropping them when it crashed). Also he said it was based solely on the two sales in my building last year, both penthouse units completely unrepresentative of my unit. Gonna try to get it lowered since I would struggle to get it appraised for the new assessed value.

I didn't know whether to throw it in here or the North Loop forum, but work appears to have begun on converting the 3 story building attached to Deja Vu into the sports bar (named The Office) that was proposed a while ago. This includes a full restoration of the exterior, which I'm pretty excited to see.

Also excited about the building's renovation. However the owners are the same guys who own The Gay 90's and The Brass Rail. I just wish they would spend some money on renovating the 90's if they have money to renovate/open a new bar/restaurant.

All the 90's would just require is a prybar, some windex, and little paint. All the windows are there, just covered up with crappy plywood.

Having been to the 90's a couple times I am not so sure having the windows open up to the street would be a very good idea  Nor do I think anyone on the inside want people on the outside to see how wild it can get. Put some new paint on it, but I like the idea of what happens in the 90's stays at the 90's. I.E those who go like the privacy.

That's definitely a good point, but I think they should go with windows that are frosted or tinted to opaqueness. It's the plywood that's the problem, even if it is painted.

Are they restoring the exterior on the entire building or just the area where the new bar is going in?

Just the ground floor. While I would love to see the original fenestration restored on the upper floors, this is still going to be a drastic improvement. The horrible pink color is also going to be removed from the structure.

Construction begins on big Nicollet Mall restaurant with rooftop patio

Construction has begun on a major restaurant project on Nicollet Mall that will include a rooftop patio, a rarity on the city's main street. Ling & Louie's Asian Bar & Grill announced a year ago it was opening its seventh U.S. location on 9th Street and Nicollet Mall a year ago.

The Asian fusion restaurant will take up four levels and top 13,000 square feet. Diversified Construction of St. Louis Park began demolition in late March and Cuningham Group of Minneapolis released an architectural rendering to the Minneapolis/St. Paul Business Journal. Cuningham Group also worked on downtown venues such as the Marq VII Lounge, in the IDS Center, and Oceanaire Seafood Room at 50 South Sixth. The restaurant, when it opens in July, will have seating on the main floor, a mezzanine level, the basement and on a rooftop patio.

Diversified Construction said the restaurant will have dark wood and Asian accents, including several large Buddhas. The rooftop patio will be only the second on Nicollet Mall, jointing Brit's Pub two blocks south. The restaurant will also have a street-level patio along Nicollet, with folding doors leading into the dining room.

I am still sad to see the independent retail stores go, but this looks like it's going to be pretty cool. While it's a chain restaurant - Mpls. scored in nabbing it instead of the burbs or MOA. Building looks great and love the rooftop deck.

Agree about the loss of independent retailers. But over the years the stretch of Nicollet Mall between 8th and 11th street has evolved into a fantastic "restaurant row" with sidewalk cafes that are teaming with people in the warmer months. It truly has a lively urban street life and "scene" that's unique. There's really no other place in MN like it . This project will be a positive addition to that.

I look forward to having the north end of the mall having the same levels of activity. But that will only happen if the CITY and developers make it mandatory to have a true street scape with more than one door of retail or restaurants at street level. The old Sheraton block has a lot of weight to carry on it's shoulders.
