Xcel Energy HQ - 401 Nicollet
Re: Xcel Energy HQ - (401 Nicollet Mall)
414 Nicollet should definitely be in line for historic protection. It's one of the best buildings to come out of the Gateway renewal, and is the work of a significant modernist architect, Pietro Belluschi.

I know we've been getting a lot of updates on the demolition of this monstrosity, but I can't resist providing another.

I'd love to see that ramp go too.

Nice find PP

Isn't that the ramp that's being torn down right now?I'd love to see that ramp go too.

That's the one behind and adjacent to the Xcel building. The building across the street with the water tower is where the library is now.

Then the date of the photo is wrong, because the Library & Planetarium was built in 1960.That's the one behind and adjacent to the Xcel building. The building across the street with the water tower is where the library is now.

Looking more closely, I was mistaken. That is the ramp that's presently being torn down. Perspective is hard.
Plus, y'know, the ramp behind Xcel isn't really 4th and Nicollet so much as 4th and 5th.

Yeah I think you're right. So the water tower building must be the alley facade of Powers Department Store maybe? Or perhaps it's a narrow infill building where the McDonald's was eventually built.

It's pretty easy to tell that the building on the next corner is renaissance square pre ground floor renovation.
*plus why would the xcel building have flag posts coming off the facade of it's rear side, I'd assume they'd be over Nicollet.

Re: Xcel Energy HQ - (401 Nicollet Mall)
They added those arches during the 80s renovation? Back when I worked at Xcel for a summer, they had about a third of their folks in that building (this was pre-Marquette Plaza renovation) and I thought it was great. And Hamlin's Cafe on the ground level was a lunch counter straight out of the 40s. Sad to see that building nearly empty. It's pretty easy to tell that the building on the next corner is renaissance square pre ground floor renovation

Yup, if you look at this link you can see it. It's the longer lot to the right, and 4marq is the tiny square on the left.

They were finishing the North I-beams today. Got a shot from the library

I think walking down Marquette there toward Soo Line is one of the most impressive views in Minneapolis. I can't wait until the northern blocks are developed!
