Haha, yeah it predictably went south. One person claimed that all these projects received government funding, then all of the sudden it was true because this is the internet.

Yep, now I'm angry at humanity again. What blows my mind is that people hang out on the comment sections enough that they recognize each other like we do on this forum.

Now that retirement homes have computers, newspaper comment sections are particularly noxious.

I completely understand how reading Strib comments can cause a thinking person to lose faith in humanity. Sometimes I just don't have the time or energy to engage. Unfortunately, the newspaper online comments may be about the closest thing we have to a public square, a civic place where ordinary citizens can debate ideas. You could make a case that newspaper comments are pretty inconsequential and any effort to engage the low-information blowhards found there is futile. You may be right. But it's also possible that our community looks to the comments to help them process and interpret news. At times a correct-sounding argument built on a logical fallacy will get an overwhelming positive reaction only to be followed by a well-written rebuke that argues the exact opposite, and also gets a overwhelmingly positive reaction. This suggests to me that average readers have not thought through many issues and remain persuadable (particularly on non-partisan topics).

A few years ago, any article mentioning light rail or bicycling was immediately swarmed by exurban-types complaining about big-city socialists eviscerating their god-given freedoms. Lately, the comment threads on these subjects have gotten a lot more civil and sensical. This is due in no small part to informed commenters patiently debunking the myths and false arguments made again and again (a shout out here to Chief Wiggum, who I suspect is a contributor to this board).

I think attention to newspaper comments may have helped to defeat the two constitutional amendments last month. The ID amendment was supported by over 80% of Minnesotans when they began polling the issue. The amendment made sense to many people on its face, but comments explaining the motivations and consequences in more uncertain terms than a "balance-seeking" media did, may have helped change enough minds for defeat. And nobody was more organized than the gay community in the last election. Part of that was dominating the comments of every article and editorial on the subject with considerate, well-written comments explaining what the amendment meant to them. Had they not done this, the vacuum would have been filled by hating Bachmann types.

It's great to read Urbanmsp where all, except an occasional troll, are interested in building a better community. But, we run the risk of hiding out in an enclave and not considering ideas from outside the echo-chamber. This is one way the internet has allowed us to become increasingly polarized.

So to tie my much too-long comment back to downtown develop and all the issues this board is concerned with. I would encourage board users to engage with the wider community (including on the Strib comments) to promote your ideas of how the city ought to change. To see how the threads can be different, go read the comments on today's Union Depot article. The same old bullshit was cut down quite convincingly.

excuse me while I puke.

Typical here:

Suburbanites - ignorant wahoos.

City folk - tolerant, heavy thinkers.

Wow, wow, wow. the arogance is astounding here at times.

Well I suppose if you're the type who likes to write all caps screeds about choo-choo's on newspaper websites you could be insulted by my comment. But I know better than to broadly paint suburbanites with that brush.

My point was simply to encourage those on this site to offer their informed opinions on the Strib website, rather than accept (and avoid) the low level of discourse found in those comments.

Do you disagree with the notion that Star Tribune comments are often irrationally negative about anything related to Minneapolis?

You portrayed that to a "T"!!!

It's ironic though, that on a City Forum like urbanmsp.com that people would favor urban living over suburban "living".....(see what I did there?)

I don't think it's possible to live in a metro like Minneapolis-St. Paul and truly loathe anything and everything "suburban", simply because so much of the metro is suburban in nature. But when it comes to conversations about city growth/prosperity, redevelopment projects, "choo choos", etc., like Viktor Vaughn I agree that not only the StarTribune but a lot of its comments goons would like nothing more than to see Minneapolis suffer and tend to spite the city. So you get a strong reaction to those types from people here on urbanmsp.com.

Oh, the irony! My appeal for exporting higher discourse kicks off ad hominem tit-for-tat right here on these pages. Apologies to the thread purists; focus has never been my strong suit. So, back to the topic at hand...

Here's a graphical representation of a part of your data.

I just saw this, and THAT is one great idea!!! I'd like to see that implemented to the full extent and possibly even replace the current method, or perhaps make them interchangable........you may commence. 8-)

Or is that everything?

I'm a bit curious as to why Nasa's post regarding the new towers was deleted? After all, didn't s/he claim to have some insider knowledge about the developments? Even though I don't buy it, I don't see his/her post being any different from the other speculative news posted elsewhere on this forum (i.e. a Wells Fargo campus).

It was all moved over to the rumors thread in the Anything Goes section, because I don't feel like "something is going to happen because I said it's going to happen and also I've said a bunch of things are going to happen over the past six years or so and they never do" is a great thing to lump in with proposed projects.

^^^ I'll let you know after I've recovered from the seizure...

in seriousness, two thoughts: 1.) Since when do we say "skywalks," instead of "skyways"? Didn't skyway make us different and cool??? 2.) Why are we using footage of Twins games in the metrodome???

Was it produced by an out of town production firm that flew in and walked around downtown without any input from a local?
