I thought the Vikings had acquired some sort of rights to the parking lot for gameday events, which was supposed to alleviate some of the congestion on the Commons. I might be totally making that up, though.

I walked 5th Street from Hennepin to the stadium today. It's still hard to really get a feel for the Commons until the Star Tribune building is gone, but Downtown East couldn't be more different already. Not having a tower blocking the parking ramp would be a pretty big bummer, though.

So, what's the Coroner going to do about that ugly parking lot?
I declare urbanism on this corner ... Was MURDERED by the legal maneuverings and shenanigans of the msfa placing stupid restrictions on development, probably at the behest of its NFL overlords.

Isn't the ramp supposed to have some active uses on the first floor? A quick search only found info on the air rights developments, but I thought the ramp was supposed to not be totally terrible.

I'm pretty sure there are some city requirements for street level frontage with retail (in connection with the air rights development), especially on the side facing the stadium and park. Can't remember the exact details or amount.

Yeah, there was some back and forth with the city about exactly which streetfront spaces needed to be initially built-out as retail space, as opposed to parking spaces that were convertible to storefronts in the future. So I'm not entirely certain where that ended up, but these spaces are entirely separate from the air-rights development deal and in theory have already been roughed out.

Not sure if we missed this article from May, or I just missed the discussion here in the thread, but it looks like the parking ramp might be "hid" by... another parking ramp????

That article was posted, and discussed on here.
I think it's too early to know what Ryan will propose for this lot. They are trying to determine what to do for the residents who will live there - and how to best offer parking to them, without utilizing the MSFA ramp.

We did discuss this when the article came out. My read was that this is a misreporting of the facts. The Strib article that came out at the same time seems to more accurately explain the situation.

While we're looking at exotic parking options, there's always mined space...

Oh sure we can dig underground for parking but conditions are totally unsuitable for a transit tunnel.

I assume you know I'm not actually recommending we mine for parking. That said...

I've never said that we don't have good geology for tunneling. Obviously we do, and Woofner will remind us of it in case we forget. But that doesn't mean it will be affordable.

Also, any transit tunnel that serves multiple stations in the downtown core (like, for example, a Nicollet tunnel which I agree would be a good idea) would almost assuredly be a shallow cut-and-cover tunnel, not a deep tunnel that can take advantage of our geology.

Carry on.

Oh yeah I wasn't saying you were advocating for anything in particular, just meant "we" as in the whole city or county or Met Council or whoever.

I just think it's funny that someone went so far as to write a report that looks at mining out under the city and yet suggestion of tunneling for transit is met with crossed arms and "tunneling is expensive!" by engineers and it's like, could you at least look at it before saying it won't work?

Anyone know when the ramp will open for business? They are moving quickly on the ramp portion...so maybe before the snow flies?

Thanks.

Is the ramp nearly finished, or are they going to at least hide this monster behind some sort of façade?

Something very odd popped up on Skyscrapercity so I thought I'd share it here.

http://hpaurban.com/portfolio-item/block-70-tower/

Now it says block 70 Tennessee, but, this site in Minneapolis, MN is also called block 70 and looks very similar in size and shape. Also there is no Minneapolis, Tennessee.

No clue how old this page is, I hope it's new and it's what we get.

I didn't actually read the title of the thread at first, and my first thought was 'Huh, that looks like Advance-thresher in the background'. Alas, that would make this Block 70, the site of the Ramp.

I'd be very okay with that being built on this liner parcel. Very sexy.

It also appears they used the now demolished building as a stand in for the ramp, which will be as tall as the podium pictured.

I think we can be fairly certain that this is indeed an image of Ryan’s air rights building. That looks like a 5-level parking ramp within the liner parcel. And that’d be the logical place for them to add parking, given the fact that they’ve been shut out of the stadium ramp.
