It looks like they are really getting to work on this now, doing preliminary foundation work. Lots more activity on site since last time I was by.

The name irks me....sounds like "Nip on 5th", and I can't tell if that turns me on or offends me!

My buddy at the Fifth Street Towers got me some great shots of this site today - with some accompanying wisdom in the captions.

Now both this and the Loring park tower have the bases of cranes in place...I wonder when we will see the rest of the tower crane! I don't know why, but I just love a nice tower crane on the skyline.

Now with a sign! In case you're wondering, the closest Suntrust Bank branch is probably in Nashville.

It's hard to take this place seriously with the name "The Nic on 5th"......sounds like an inside joke.

I don't see how the name sounds like an inside joke? It's not bad...one of the better ones lately I think compared to Elsewarehouse and The Natural.

It does to me. It just sounds like it's trying to be hip and yet its market is likely going to be rich working professionals and empty nesters. To me, it's akin to building a luxury 5-star hotel and then calling it "Liv" or something stupid that won't really resonate with its target market.

I just don't like it, but it's just my personal opinion. I'd rather it be called "The Nicollet on 5th" or "5th & Nicollet" or even "Nic on Five".

People on this site suck ass at posting pictures

i think it's unfortunate that the facade couldn't help recreate what was there before "progress" turned the powers building into a parking lot:

is there a plaza as part of this project, or are they just exaggerating the amount of sidewalk space that exists at the corner of Nicollet & 5th St? If you look at the picture you'd think there is this massive plaza here (it's been a couple years, but I don't remember there being anything like that around here).

There is a plaza at 5th & Nicollet. It's part of Excel's building across the Mall. The rendering shows it because the viewpoint is west along 5th, with Renaissance Square on the right side.

I'm looking forward to the play on words for the potential retail component:

A home goods store: "Nic Nax"
Gym: "Nic Fit"
Danceclub: "Beat Nic"
Beauty salon and spa: "Darling Nic-Kiki"

What about that high end watch shop? 'Nic of Time' was it?

"The Nicollet" was a failed Condo project on the south end of The Mall, I'm guessing they did not want to be associated with that project.

They should call it the Powers Tower. I'd be scared to get on the elevator though. ;)
