I'd guess the opening is actually the public "alley" that exists between this parcel and 1016 Marquette: http://gis.hennepin.us/property/map/def ... 2924130027

1016 Marquette is owned by the same group, so it's safe to say it is part of the development. It probably stops there and does not interfere with CCO's loading dock

City renderings make it look like only the current building's facade survives.

Not sure why this building is any better than River Towers. In other words, ugly!

The glass. The balconies. The white.
So many visual things that make this NOT the typical Kasota stone buildings seen a lot around town.

293 units? Nice. I like the design too. Of course someone here is going to complain about height. And I'll just say in the current part of downtown this is in, it fits. Its sleek and interesting and just adds to the density. How will it age? That's the hard part from looking at it now.

And of course the tenants of the Handicraft Guild Building are going to be displaced for apartment amenities.

Man do I wish these were condos though. That law needs to change asap before the apartment bubble bursts.

Agreed. Does anyone know if there's any traction on that in St. Paul?

That and how is our law different from that of other states? Enlightened minds, please do tell!

I normally like when buildings include walk-up townhomes, but I wish in this case they would have made the first, and maybe second, floor retail with the express intention of letting some of those tenants come back after construction.

[boundlessoptimism]Maybe that's still on the table, and that's why the townhome floorplans don't have details like the apartments?

Completely gutting the protected building and only preserving the facade...and not even a set back...I don't think so. Don't care for that at all. I like the new part...but no.

Speaking of the current building and former (current?) tenants... Floyd Thompson's drum shop was in the upper level. I remember about five years ago taking a walk over there on a lunch hour and investigating. It had all the cues of a place that was long-closed... no real online information beyond possibly existing. So I went into the building, up the stairs, and knocked on the door. And this old gentleman, Floyd Thompson, opened the door. It wasn't much of a "shop" at that point, but he gave lessons in one room and had another room across the hall full of drum gear.

He's legendary in the local drum community, and has taught the masters.
