Re: Minnesota Multi Purpose Stadium
How can we talk about birds when THERE ARE PEOPLE STARVING IN AFRICA </sarcasm>
Re: Minnesota Multi Purpose Stadium
The Audobon society is on that as well (http://web4.audubon.org/bird/at_home/safecats.html).Are we really going with the "It's never affected me, so it's clearly not a problem at all" argument here? Even the lowest estimate says 300 Million birds (Highest estimate, 1 billion) are killed by buildings each year in NA.
How many are killed per year by house cats? What's being done about them?
http://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nati ... y/1873871/
...But seeing as how they aren't building a cat-breeding facility on this site, in this case the Audobon society is focusing on stadium glass.
Re: Minnesota Multi Purpose Stadium
This is a reason to expend more effort on protecting the birds who aren't slaughtered by housecats, not less. How many are killed per year by house cats? What's being done about them?

(Though if you really have an outdoor cat in Minneapolis, you're being deeply irresponsible for more than just the risk to birds.)

Re: Minnesota Multi Purpose Stadium
Aside from my sarcasm, I really do enjoy spreading around some knowledge on this issue. It seems most people really have no idea what's going on with this except "BIRDS!" I think if more people knew the facts of the matter, then it'd be a less divisive issue. Alas, can't convince everyone that real facts actually mean more than their opinion.

As with all threads on this forum and on other forums and also in real life situations but especially this thread on this forum, it's worth considering whether or not it's worth bothering.

Re: Minnesota Multi Purpose Stadium
Back on point - does anyone know when the center girder truss goes in place?
Re: Minnesota Multi Purpose Stadium
I think there are three more pieces of the spine to install. Looks like the last one goes in around June.

They are about to lift another of the main truss sections. Just two more after this one!

How long does it take to move a camera? Forever apparently. The live cam is still not up.
Re: Minnesota Multi Purpose Stadium
actually they lifted it like 5 feet to do some work to the bottom and then lowered it back down
Re: Minnesota Multi Purpose Stadium
Been awhile since I had the chance to walk downtown, but I was amazed by how much of the seating bowl has been completed

The pic doesn't do the width of this stadium justice.

Was on campus at the U on Saturday, and the big gray side of this will figure pretty majorly into the view of the skyline from the East Bank. Hope the zinc or whatever looks nice.

Re: Minnesota Multi Purpose Stadium
Entering 94 east from Hennepin Ave, it was amazing how the main truss extends on either side of Grant Park and (I think) Skyscape. The Dome was completely hidden by those towers but the truss looks like a giant spear through both of them.
Re: Minnesota Multi Purpose Stadium
The Metrodome was pretty hulking when viewed from the U. I rather think this is more attractive than that, but it will certainly be even more massive. Was on campus at the U on Saturday, and the big gray side of this will figure pretty majorly into the view of the skyline from the East Bank. The dome was a strange figure from different angles it loomed massively and appeared larger than it really was. This from those same angles is going to be quite a site.

They’re making the area around the stadium more bike-friendly:

"A vehicle lane would be added to busy Sixth Street, which is a heavily used route to reach Interstate 94 and the east metro."
That's disconcerting -- it's already a 3+ lane racetrack that I'm surprised hasn't caused more death and destruction.

Re: Minnesota Multi Purpose Stadium
The added lane will be in the opposite direction, providing some connectivity with the loss of 5th.

Re: Minnesota Multi Purpose Stadium
That makes sense, though I'd like to see two things:
1. A planted median to calm things and provide crossing refuge (though providing enough side friction as to not speed up traffic).
2. Reduce the number of eastbound lanes to 2, but have a parking lane that's a peak bus/HOV lane to get to the freeway.
