It’s hard to imagine anything short of a minor nuclear detonation really helping this sad monument to architectural bad taste.

Hmm, maybe two nuclear detonations - one for City Center and one for the even more ghastly Treasure Island Center - what on earth were they thinking? The pig is dirty white in this case, but the lipstick is a total mess. The most recent render (I just saw one today) of the City Center redesign is at least more even handed and clean. The mess at TIC - which extends around all three visible faces of the old Dayton’s building is a jumble of conflicting ideas, cheapened on every side by the cheesy Treasure Island branding.

I won’t hold my breath on this one. The budget is small - given the scope of what really would need to be done to transform the dismal Mall frontage of City Center. It’s not only lipstick, but cheap lipstick at that.

I don't know, The Nicollet Mall frontage has been neglected by the owners for decades. Maybe not great, but at least it's a clearly visible improvement , and they're finally removing some of the fortress wall.

The renovation did not finish in October, but it's apparently moving along. They're on the ZBA agenda tomorrow for signage variances.

Additionally, a Chase Bank branch is coming in at some point, presumably in the skyway level. (Are there any ground level bank branches in the downtown core?)

Well there's the drive though on at Centre Village...

And an unstaffed BoA "service center" on the 100 block of Washington Ave N.

Portland and 8th will have the new Wells Fargo on ground floor to replace the drive through one on Park. Not core downtown though

The variance requests seem completely reasonable for a large shopping center like City Center and I hope the ZBA approves. Nothing they requested is out of line with similar buildings or even existing signs downtown. Their presentation sold me

It looks better and gives the complex a more prominent entrance on Nicollet Mall and 7th. But why didn't they just carry this through and renovate the whole Nicollet Mall side? It certainly needs it.

This.. didn't add doors. Wasn't it supposed to add doors and split the massive space?

They appear to have used some of the Nicollet Mall frontage for a hallway that maybe has a fire escape? That would rock.
