Vacant School Reuse

Postby fehler » March 20th, 2013, 9:22 am

The "old" Northrup School on 46th street and 16th Ave (not to be confused with the "New" Northrup School, aka the "Old" Ericsson School), has been sold to Hiawatha Academies, a charter school group that currently runs programs out of the former Morris Park Elementary (56th street and 38th Ave) and Incarnation School (38th Street and Pleasant). Their goal is to open it with 78 Kindergartners this fall.

There's a bit of smelly politics in this, as Alberto Monseratte is both a former leader in this group, and a current MPS board member ("abstaining" from the vote, of course).

However this is indicative of the surge in reopening of school buildings in the area. Howe school in Longfellow is reopening next fall, and a dual-campus partner with Hiawatha School. Longfellow School recently reopened as a "teen parent" magnet program. Folwell reopened last fall, as a K-8, moving the "Fine Arts Magnet" program over from Ramsey, which is being re-purposed as a middle school feeder for Washburn. Lake Nokomis-Keewaydin (dual campus 4-8, with Lake Nokomis-Wenonah) is being expanded.

In fact, the only "vacant" school property I can think of in the south east quarter is Cooper.
