This would be a huge "get" imho. Should increase foot traffic in Calhoun Square a good deal.

Yes, this is a appropriate chain for Uptown. It will be nice to see the vacant storefronts along Hennepin filled up!The mix of retail is improving in Uptown with less emphasis on mega-bar complexes.

Eh, it seems like BOTH are appropriate for Uptown, given the demographic that typically lives there (TYPICALLY 20-somethings and/or transplants). This is coming close to a destination-type shopping area, which it certainly hasn't been very much since I've been old enough to drive (~15 years now)!

That would be awesome! They are one of the only places I can find that actually has slim fitting shirts, cheap ones at least. I have been wishing they would open downtown...it seems like they are one of the few retailers that would actually do well downtown, huge with the lunch hour shopping crowd. This is in the city at least, and 4 blocks from my place!

With all this new stuff...I fear my rent may actually go up for the first time in 10 years. It was a bit steep when I moved in, but now it's a sweet deal. We shall see.

I little competition for Urban Outfitters... Cool. Actually, cooler and cheaper. Should be fun.

"H&M announces Calhoun Square store
July 12, 2012 by southwestjournal

//By Dylan Thomas//

CARAG — Fast-fashion clothing retailer H&M today confirmed its plans to open a 23,000-square-foot store in Calhoun Square this fall.

It had been reported for months that H&M was close to a deal with the Uptown shopping mall. The retailer has 245 U.S. locations, but only one other store in Minnesota, at the Mall of America.

“H&M believes strongly in the Minnesota market and is excited to offer even more local customers access to the brand’s fashion-forward, quality collections,” a statement from the company read. “The approximately 23,000 square foot store at Calhoun Square will include collections for ladies, men, young ladies and young men, with separate ‘store within store’ sections for accessories, lingerie, maternity, and sports apparel.”

Founded in Sweden in 1947, H&M opened its first U.S. store in New York City in 2000. It has 2,500 stores across the globe."

Sweet!

Nitpicking but I think there is also H&M at Southdale.

Awesome. H&Ms draw a lot of foot traffic. A huge get for CS and uptown in general.

Wow, they didn't fact check on that article. They have stores at Southdale, MOA, Maplewood and Woodbury. It looks like they caught that error and have already corrected it on thier website:)

I know they have a two level store in Southdale. I walked by it the other day.

I agree, this is a great fit for Calhoun Square. I recently found out that Urban Outfitters is owned by some douche who makes political donations to Rick Santorum. I'll try not to shop there anymore.

I was pretty shocked when I found out that Express used to have a Calhoun Square location. They need to return to the area. If Express was a fit for Uptown before, they're even more so now with the increase in people who can afford $1200/mo 1BR apartments.

Rents are high enough that most regular chains lose money on their Uptown stores. They locate there for marketing purposes, being in high traffic locations can strengthen your brand and lead to higher sales elsewhere. This is the theory anyway. It is likely that Express doesn't feel compelled to lose money on a Calhoun Square store, or can't afford to.

According to a Strib article, Republic will be opening a second location in the old Independent space later this year! I'd throw in a link, but I'm on my phone. Regardless, great news as far as I'm concerned.

I've only been to Republic once and really enjoyed it. The only reason I haven't gone back is because the only parking lot at Seven Corners charged me $13 for about three hours.

The Independent is gone? I kinda liked that one!

This is BETTER than the Independent....I didn't know it was a beer bar! When I'm back in town and somebody asks where we should go out, this will be one of my likely choices for Uptown!

The comments are great as usual, people complaining about another "chain" coming into Uptown.
