This is very exciting! Cheapo down the street. I've heard the old Chicken Shack is getting a redo too. Can't remember where I saw that at the moment.

This morning I spoke with the owner of the building next door that is undergoing a remodel and it sounds like they are expecting construction to begin on this later this year. This neighborhood has changed quite a bit over the last 5 years and it's continuing evolve. The addition of Cheapo is another bonus for an area that is really springing back to life.

Having Cheapo will bring in another demographic to the area both in retail and the customers who will frequent Cheapo. This is a business that is not a food business like the food shops and restaurants. This will give a wider exposure of what eat street has to offer those that went to Cheapo, but have never gone to the Eat street area. I hope that this will be a plus for both Cheapo and for the other Nicollet businesses in general.

The development had the option to take advantage of reduced parking requirements for new residential buildings along transit corridors, but instead it's providing about 61 parking spots (and 60 bike racks) for the 64-unit building.

It looks like this was bumped up to 70 units and 54 parking spaces. Not bad!

Wonderful! I've been in the neighborhood 5 years now, and while there have been a lot of changes on Nicollet (Eat Street Social, Ice House, etc.), there hasn't been any new construction. Also excited to see commercial activity creep along 26th (although I still hate the rehab they did to the building next to Little T; it looks ... unfinished).

Hope this new construction will stimulate some other construction on the empty holes between 26th and the greenway. IF they get the street cars that will for sure help drive development. But this project show that someone has the faith in the area and is going to get in before the price of developing in the area goes up. They will hopefully be the catalyst for future projects.

This proposal, including an far variance, was approved by the cpc. The developer doesn't want basement parking disturbing the polluted soil . The variance allows the underground parking far density bonus. A neighbor is appealing the far variance saying the soil really isn't polluted. The developer's consultant offers a pretty convincing smack down in response.

I dunno, I guess I feel for the people bothered by this enough that they can't stand to live by this building so much that they feel the need to sell their house. But not much. I'm not going to freeze neighborhoods in amber because of feels. That, and whoever is selling their house isn't doing it as a financial loss ... this neighborhood is on the rise. Sure, it's inconveniencing. So?

And the home will be bought by someone who is willing to pay to live by the apartment, so, win-win. Am I supposed to feel bad there is turnover because of this apartment? I don't and I won't.

I had an "exchange" with Giancarlo last month on Nextdoor Whittier... Having lived in Whittier for most of the last 30 years... this neighborhood is really divided. The old guard is against everything... they see any development as destroying the neighborhood. I am really glad that this is going forward and that at least one of the NIMBYs are moving away. They were complaining that Minneapolis is getting too dense...

I was going by on the bus the other day and saw someone putting up CPM signs on the fence, but when I went by today I swear they were gone. WTH? Anyone know if this thing is started?
