Can anyone tell me anything about the Snelling Yards proposal, other then there is a community meeting coming up about it?

Doesn't sound like there's a proposal yet. From the description, the city still owns the land, and they're going to put out an RFP to redevelop it, and want input on what that should entail.

Is there any possibility, in concert with this development, that the train tracks would be removed on this block (44th-45th St)?

Ideally, all tracks should be removed south of 41st or so. Everything south of 38th is just traincar storage, queuing, etc., right?
Obviously they still need some space south of 38th for those storage/queuing operations, but would the 3 blocks between 38th to 41st would be enough?

What if they tore out some buildings on the 4000 block of Dight Ave and built a small rail yard here? https://www.google.com/maps/place/Hiawa ... 93.2241701

wat? Take out Hiawatha Lumber and AA? That's crazy. Good businesses that wouldn't be worth losing . Not to mention the new apartment building going into the old sash factory on 41st & Hiawatha.

My intent was not to be specific to those businesses. I'm looking for a solution that would allow the removal of as many blocks of freight track as possible...ideally full removal of track south of either 41st or 42nd. But how do you do that and allow current train operations (to 38th) to continue, given that some kind of storage/queuing space is still needed south of 38th?

They're gonna go for a repeat of the Mill City Quarter development, with senior housing and affordable (50-60% AMI) housing.
senior building - 103 units
apartment building - 100 units

I think the Alt B concept is a good alternate. Brings the southern building up to the street as much as possible but with the northern building fronting the sure to be desirable trail.

Snelling Yards housing concept gets bigger
Lupe Development, The Wall Cos. and Ecumen are boosting the size of the two-building apartment complex, at 3601 44th St. E. in Minneapolis, by 48 units to 251. The developers are planning a $58 million project consisting of a 121-unit affordable apartment building and a 130-unit affordable, 55-plus age-restricted building, according to a city staff report.

Seems 'ok' in my book. I'm not terribly *excited* about the project but I'm a strong believer in developing with density, particularly near transit lines. If only they could make accessing the train stations when coming from the east of Hiawatha more reasonable. Perhaps over time increasing population in the area around the 45th station will spur a fix.
I like that the moved the parking lot behind the building.

Looks like this project is being scaled back a little bit, perhaps just undoing the news from a couple posts up where it was increased to 251 total units. Still 4-story affordable senior housing, 5-story workforce housing. http://snellingyards.com/ says 210 units, but I'm not sure how current that is.

Page 6 really lays it out how much worse this has gotten since the May 2018 version.
-Less building
-More surface parking (instead of underground, which they appear to have eliminated entirely)
-No building frontage along 45th Street
-parking stalls facing the future MinHi Line linear park to the west.

This is bad. The city owns this property and created the RFP. Why would they allow this terrible development in a TOD?
