Same here, I have mixed feelings on this one. Almost anything is better than what's there now. Adding the tree islands to the parking lot will make it a little less hostile to life. However, since no structured parking is being included with the building it limits any future development of the lot.

Also - really hoping this catalyzes pressure for Target (and the trust group that owns the land) to release some of unused parking across the street for development. Hundreds of those spaces haven't had a car park in them for years if ever!
I feel like I remember hearing in some community meeting a year or two ago that there were plans at some point to put some more of those 1+5 buildings with retail on the first floor, housing up above around the edges of that big empty Target parking lot as well once all the stuff over here by the ALDI was done. Basically putting stuff right up to the sidewalks all the way around that big empty parking space.

If I recall, the parking lots encompassing Cub, Target, and the ALDI are the largest empty chunk of concrete in the city aside from the impound lot, so it's definitely sorely needed.

Anyone else see this article from the Trib about the Town Talk Diner?

http://www.startribune.com/minneapolis- ... sx9NywnK50

Sounds like they've been having trouble getting the neighborhood to come to their restaurant and they only ever seem to get out-of-towners. From the article and from going over and reading the Nextdoor thread seems like a lot of people thought they were closed. Myself included tbh. Hell, I've lived like three blocks away for four years and I thought the place was closed.

Well, one step that seems really obvious would be to put a menu on their website. I know, farm to fork/changing menu and all that, but similar places manage to do it, so they should too.

Kind of sucks that they're stuck with the "Diner" part of the name due to the sign -- I thought they were a modernized diner before I found out more about them.

We went into that location many years ago in an iteration where it was a martini bar, I think. It was unremarkable. It never crossed my mind to try it again. I might give it a try - especially since some strib commenter told them to take foie gras off the menu, sounds like it must be pretty good - but I would like to see at least a sample menu online before committing a night's dining experience to it.

This is why I haven't gone. I didn't know if they were open, I don't know what their format is now (i.e.: they have no identity), there is a revolving door of ownership so why go and start to like a place that will be something else in a few months? I do feel bad for the current owners...I just didn't know about them or the current business.

They seem to imply that because they are farm to fork/have a changing menu that is a reason NOT to put their menu online. I would argue exactly the opposite: that is specifically a reason TO put your menu online. Updating a menu with daily changes should be a quick and easy task and you want to get anything special out to the general public while it's still hot, so to speak. In some ways the mindset of the current owners seems a bit locked or in a rut and they've convinced themselves of things that are the opposite of the truth. I wish them well and will probably go check them out soon (now that I know they exist) but they need to quit shooting their own feet. A frequently updated web presence is probably the quickest and best way of community outreach.

Yeah it's one of those things where everyone knows it's there but nobody knows what it is. I think the high-end concepts did a lot of damage because they created a mismatch between the sign, the history, etc and the concept. I've never considered it since. Either that sign has to go or the concept has to go. Their website says "farm to fork" and "gastropub" but the sign says "greasy spoon." But the sign is amazing, so I hope the concept changes to match the sign.

It's also not an area where I would expect a high-end restaurant to do well (there are a number of good restaurants in the area, just not what I would consider fancy ones). I think they would have been better off leaning into the diner concept, personally.

Yeah, two doors down from a payday loan place definitely doesn't strike me as where I'd find a high end restaurant.

They have menus (or example menus, technically) on their website now, so it's encouraging that they are listening to feedback.

Oh? Hopefully whatever takes its place still has breakfast stuff. Like a local breakfast joint or one the slightly better version of Denny's like a Baker's Square/Perkins or something

Planet Fitness is looking to move into MInnehaha Mall. Too bad they can’t rethink this entire area and the massive surface parking lot.

Anyone know why they've been cutting down a lot of the trees along Minnehaha between the Target/Cub parking lots and the ALDI parking lots? That lack of green is making the area look even worse :(

Just guessing, but the city has been systematically culling out all of the ash trees on public property.

They started working on something new in the old Rainbow parking lot. A long chunk of the parking lot is all fenced off and torn up, as well as the sidewalk the curved around the Wendy's. Wonder if this is the beginning of that 5 story tall apartment complex they mentioned at a community meeting a couple years back.
