I believe they are moving this week, if they haven't already moved.
That sounds about right. The phone store in that strip got torn out this week, and the interior of the Rainbow did as well. I wouldn't be surprised if that whole thing is empty by mid May. All that's left is just the tobacco store.
Additionally filling in the Minnehaha/Lake corner with street front retail could really add to Downtown Longfellow. Long-term dream I guess, blocked by miles of red tape
That would be amazing. A little strip with retail maybe some other fast casual type restaurants like a Noodles & Company or something. I'd love to have more quick options around here aside from Wendys and Arbys.

Some food trucks in that lot would be nice even, like Kmart has.

I like this idea, or perhaps some sort of market which won't interfere with those who have leases in the nearby buildings. (Maybe even weekend music and art or something creative?) The community has an good example of what can be done with an empty surface lot by looking nearby to the Corcoran Neighborhood Association and the farmers market in the MPS lot.

The sign on Hop Wongs door says the 28th is the move day but they aren't open right now so they probably are already closed down for good in the Minnehaha location. I assume the 28th will be when they open over on the Chicago/29th spot.

Looks like all of the tenants of the building are now out. Hop Wong has moved over to Chicago/29th area, Cellular place is gone, and the Tobacco shop moved over next to the Minnehaha-Lake Liquor Store. Workers have been in there pulling out scrap metal and jackhammering at the floor this past week

They've really been working on that old Rainbow since last I posted. On the North side of the building there are some large chunks of the wall cut out for doors and (what I assume) will be windows at some point. When the sun is shining in the front in the afternoon I looks like the main studs and beams laying out all the wall structures for the interior are up with some further along than others. It's still a ways out before it's done and there doesn't appear to be any signage about an end date but it's certainly making a lot of progress.

It looks like the Cub Foods here at Minnehaha/Lake is getting some sort of remodel or makeover. Fences up around a bunch of the exterior, some of the interior shelves are moved away from the walls. Doesn't seem to be any postings about what the outcome will be, does anyone know if there is any info about what is changing with it?

I'm all for this Cub actually looking decent for once lol.

On Friday the Store Manager saw me trying to find a place to lock my bicycle and told me that they're just redoing the exterior and that it's part of a 10 year project. I'm not sure if they're at the beginning or the end of it to be honest. He also said there have some temporary bike racks up soon and that the old ones will be back.

The rendering for the redesigned Cub foods at Hi-lake looks great, I can't seem to find it anywhere online but I'll try to get a picture of the posting they have for it next time I"m there. I hope they redo the inside like the outside, goodness knows it needs it.

As far as big box groceries go, that's sharp.

What exactly is that a rendering of? It looks like the Cubs store.

It's nice that they're investing in the neighborhood.

Not to be the dissenting voice, but in that rendering it looks like the grocery stores and k-marts of my childhood in the 1970s.

Yeah, maybe everybody is commenting ironically. I agree that my first thought also was that it looked like a Kmart.

Lol you beat me to it Minneboom. Just took a pic there tonight and found it was already here :D Sure it doesn't look as crazy amazing as it could, but it looks way better than it does right now. I just hope the inside gets a touch up as much as the outside. It definitely could use it.

I'm looking forward to the community meeting at the end of the month about whats going on with the Rainbow Foods and the parking lot in front of it.

There is a community meeting tonight inside the new charter school in the Rainbow building at 6pm. Regarding plans for that parking lot area in front of the old Rainbow and Schooner. Here are the developer visualizations:

Looks pretty great to me!

The "A food market" sign on the rendering looks conspicuously like Aldi. I'm gonna speculate that Aldi would like to relocate here since they cannot expand in their current mixed-use digs on the west side of Hiawatha. Both properties are owned by Wellington, so that would certainly simplify things with the leases, etc.

EDIT: Even the architecture of the parapet roof, etc. looks exactly like an Aldi.
