Is it called Richfield Road, or E Calhoun Parkway?

Postby Anondson » June 28th, 2017, 11:48 pm

Is there an official source with the official name for the stretch of road between W36th and William Berry Parkway?

Some the Minneapolis Parks has the parking lot there, for instance, addressed as 3825 Richfield Road, some Hennepin County pages have the stretch of road labeled E Calhoun Parkway.

What's the accurate name? What to the street signs say?

This might be seen as nitpicky because to little is actually along it, a historic street car stop, the parking lot, nothing else? But if someone were trying to, say, fix an online map service, you'd want the accurate name of the street.

Hennepin’s GIS webpages have it labeled E Calhoun.

Well, Google has it as Richfield Road between 36th and Wm. Berry, then E. Calhoun from Wm. Berry to 39th where the one-way section at the intersection is again Richfield Road.

It would be informative to look at old insurance maps and the like. Richfield Road doesn't reach Richfield anymore and perhaps should be renamed Linden Hills Road. :)

And ESRI’s ArcGIS Explorer app has Richfield Road from 40th to Wm Berry, but E Calhoun from Wm Berry to 36th. Bewildering.

The City's street map says it is Calhoun Parkway E until William Berry Parkway, where everything south becomes Richfield Road. http://www.ci.minneapolis.mn.us/www/gro ... 255931.pdf

However, this public works document has a GIS map that appears to have that same section as Richfield Road. http://www.minneapolismn.gov/bicycles/p ... MSP-188125

And perhaps, finally, this staff report for its reconstruction calls it Richfield Road and references it as MN State Aid Route No. 201. http://www.minneapolismn.gov/www/groups ... 256685.pdf

Given that Calhoun Parkway's name is not long for this world, it would seem to be a good time to clear this up.

The Park Board can rename what they control, and have. But do they get to rename the parkways or is that the city or county? Or state if it’s a state aid road?

Well, there was once richfield road and Calhoun parkways there. The parkway was a bridal path, later for cars, that followed the edge of the shore (basically where the new parking lot now sits.) All that was changed in the 1970s parkway renovations. The current ROW on that section now has always been Richfield Road.

Our political candidates need to take a position on this top issue in the city!

Is the roadway tinted red? Then it's an official MPRB Parkway/Boulevard. Apparently that was Horace Cleveland's idea to set them apart from the city's roads. Just learned that this year and now I can't unsee it.

Interesting Sean. Attached is an aerial image that I can't recall the date of, but it is probably late 20s or early-to-mid 30s. Seems that it may support what you are suggesting.

Then there's this image, undated, that shows the southward view.

Just came across this thread seeing if Richfield had come up anywhere recently :D

Looks like County GIS map has fixed it so that this SE corner correctly displays as Richfield Road. I've never seen it as Calhoun Pkwy / Maka Ska Pkwy.

The boundaries are pretty clear: the much-narrower portion is a park road. The wider, concrete portion between 36th and 39th is a city street, Richfield Road. This is consistent with how Calhoun/Maka Ska Pkwy meets Lake St, where a busier street replaces that portion of the parkway road.

Funny bug with this street name that's since been fixed: the Richfield Home Depot has an address on Richfield Pkwy, a new-ish street that wasn't recorded on Mapquest or whatever. So for years, Home Depot was shown on HD's website midway down Richfield Road -- closest street name it could find.
