I feel like there are a lot of urban minded people that like the choice. It always feels like the options are exactly downtown or suburban nowhere. Seems like a good middle option.

I've never understood the appeal of vacationing in Uptown. You go out to dinner and then what?

Don't know about vacation, but I can see cooing to town and deciding to stay away from downtown. I mean, it beats the heck out of staying by the MOA. Arguably beats downtown for nightlife.

Yeah, really any options that are in the city but aren't downtown is great. There just aren't a lot of great options right now.

When I was growing up, my family had a full house, so whenever relative visited, they usually stayed at nearby hotels rather than forcing people out of their rooms. I could see the same deal here - your family lives in South/Southwest Minneapolis or nearby neighborhoods of SLP/Edina. You want your own space or they can't host you, so you stay somewhere with a good view and access to shops. I imagine there's also gotta be a market in the future for people who visit downtown for work but don't like staying downtown...there will be a quick light rail ride to the office...some day.

I had a friend visiting from DC this weekend and he was thrilled to see that there was finally a hotel in Uptown. He said he's tired of having to stay downtown.

When this was originally floated by the developer a couple months ago...I feel like it had a much more interesting 10 story design? Guess the neighborhood went for the shorter wider version again?

Seriously? This is "too tall"? Why are some people in this city so afraid of tall buildings?

They probably don't even feel that way, they just have to have their voice heard on something, anything.

Of course it's too tall, there's a seven story building across the street.

Is this project officially dead? BP has a sign up saying they’re not closing. And a hiring sign on the door. I asked the cashier and he didn’t think they were ever planning to close. But that doesn’t seem true.

Yeah, I don't think there was ever a set plan for it to close. Maybe they are just sick of people asking? Side note, this BP is owned by the same people that own the BP a little further down Excelsior. 2 of the most overpriced gas stations in the twin cities when it comes to anything inside.

That BP further down on Excelsior (in SLP) was the first one I noticed that advertised a very low Regular gas price, but charged 50¢ or more per gallon extra for Premium. Surprise!

Still happening. Now 9 stories, with wider sidewalks. Could begin this fall.

The West Calhoun Neighborhood Council feedback was positive that it was narrower, but also upset it was blocky and icky.

I like it, it's simple but well designed with quality looking materials. I just also hope it helps do some street calming.

I agree it’s well designed, and as the gateway to the eastern edge of Lake/Excelsior/France, it’s far superior to the ugly gateway at the eastern edge of Uptown, where Arby’s used to be.

This project got better.

The slip lane in front of the hotel is unfortunate. The best option would be to get rid of it, the second best option would be to rough up the pavement before that crosswalk so that drivers get the message and slow down.

Regarding the slip lane -- not sure about your definition of a slip lane, but I read that to be all of the eastbound traffic on Lake Street that's continuing east after the merge in the new geometry.

Yeah, I was wondering about that, too. So that’s going to be two lanes of traffic that will turn left to continue east on Lake Street, where currently the traffic goes straight and bends slightly left?

I haven't seen the plans, but that's what it looks like to me.
