True. It's on E 7th St, up the hill from Metro State.

I'm not sure what the absolute best idea would be there, but closing the block doesn't seem so bad to me. I've walked over there a few times after work and have been amazed at how hard it is to cross that street just one or two blocks up the hill from the end of the on-/off-ramps. People really don't want to stop, and are not yet acclimated to the residential nature of the area at that distance.

I think the city has already tried a few traffic-calming measures there, but the street could use more. Closing the street entirely is a fairly big-hammer approach, but is worthy of consideration.
I'm not sure that it's a good idea to create bottlenecks by having too few through streets (suburbs often do this, making the remaining through streets more likely to have traffic problems, as well as reducing options for transit routing), just because the other streets happen to be residential. 3rd St is also largely residential -- are they going to close a block of that too? Lots of major roads in St Paul have a lot of single-family residential on them. Perhaps restricting through trucks, increasing traffic enforcement, and/or other traffic calming measures would be a reasonable middle ground.

But if a closure must be done, another possibility would be to place a bike/ped-permeable barrier just east of the Maria/6th intersection, or make the block between Maria and Bates one-way westbound (this would still permit through use westbound, where you wouldn't have the "just got off the freeway" effect on driving style, or you could make the block between Bates and Maple be one-way eastbound as well). This would preserve access to the big parking lot (and the Strip Club, etc) without needing to route cars on 7th St for a block. Of course, this assumes the main reason for it is traffic calming, rather than connecting MSU to a new building across 6th.

Looks like St. Paul just grabbed one area of bragging rights - most hipster ZIP code. Hipsterdom died in Minneapolis like, last month anyways.

The MPR news ticker is finally up and running again after degrading, being completely turned off for a while, and finally going through a refurbishment process. Segments have been reappearing for the last couple of months, and I think the final piece went in overnight.

This is quite the article about Selby Hill, history, homelessness, and city life.

And by "this," you clearly meant this:

http://finance-commerce.com/2013/12/dem ... buildings/ paywalled, but intriguing. 7 buildings on the St. Paul Riverfront would be pretty substantial. I'd love to see a better utilization of the awesome topography and views that exist between Kellogg and the river area.

I was told last night that a master developer has been chosen for the Snelling bus barn site and that the Union Park DC will start dealing with it in meeting over the next six months.

Also a rumor that the city turned down a suggestion from Minnesota United that it might be a good site for a soccer stadium.

Sad. It would have been a good, affordable spot to put a soccer stadium. They could call it Midway Stadium. And Bob Dylan could play there every few summers.

I think its just them trying to diversify their holding away from just casinos, and considering the train wreck that was the downtown Minneapolis proposal casino I doubt they are looking for a casino in St. Paul.

I just received my new Monitor local news paper and there a bunch of University Ave development updates. The info isn't online yet but here's what it had to say about a few items that don't have a dedicated thread:

-Orton Development Company recently purchased 2 West Midway industrial buildings. They have not announced plans, but has redeveloped more than 15 million sq ft over the past 30 years. Neither are near the Green Line, so I don't have high hopes:
----former Silgan Container @ 747 Prior Ave for $1.4 million
----Wycliff Center @ 2327 Wycliff St for $550,000

-It also mentions redevelopment options are being eyed for the former Midway Metro Transit bus garage site at Snelling and St Anthony Aves. The site has been used for LRT construction storage.

Ditto! I'd like to better stay abreast of what's going on across the river and it's surprisingly difficult. I get the feeling there's a lot more happening in St. Paul than I am aware of.

No problem. As I said, I get a local paper that usually has a tidbit or two. I will try and stay on top of it as much as possible.

Find the Villager on line which covers the south west part of St. Paul. Sorry I have no link to share.
