unfortunate that in minnesota culture people can't seem to figure out the importance of harmonizing building height with adjacent structures. this one should have been two or three floors higher...

I promise you that Minnesota culture had nothing to do with the height of this building.

I kept driving by this last week and while it's not tall it's nice to see more residential construction in downtown. Hopefully this along with the LRT should help DT St. Paul break out of it's only open during 9-5 on a weekday persona.

All they need to do now is redevelop surface lots on Jackson and put some trees in the median to connect this area better with Lowertown. Since I've heard people relate the city to an East Coast or European city, we might as well act like one by improving our downtown density and adding more landscaped boulevards :).

very cool how the part of the previous building's facade has been incorporated. it's very striking while approaching the building.

Is the Lunds opening this fall? Or not until next year?

I believe the Lunds is tentatively scheduled to open June 2014, but hopefully it will be sooner.

It's so disappointing to look at this and know what it COULD have been. Bleh.

Well, the most important thing for St. Paul is to start replacing surface lots with active uses, blank walls with sidewalk-friendly uses, and a sense of neighborhood cohesion beyond the confines of Rice Park or Mears Park. Once this is complete, there will be increased demand and decreased supply (surface lots) and the result will be more mid-rises and high-rises.

Building another Galtier wouldn't have helped make a neighborhood as much as setting the framework for 4 or 5 of these at the north end of St. Paul near the LRT and neighborhood amenities.

Agreed. Just out of curiosity, what does "north end" refer to? I ask because most of Lowertown a block or two off Mears Park is already converted to housing and/or developed. Now things get a bit harder in this area due to the LRT maintenance facility and the ballpark being in the way. U.S. 52 doesn't help either. The area around Wacouta Commons could use some love. Is that what you mean? I'm just trying to get a picture of where you think things will happen next.

I'm really excited about what's going on in DT St. Paul. The Macy's closure may have been a blessing in disguise, allowing downtown to redefine itself as a dense neighborhood of local/boutique shops and restaurants that still has major employers in it. In another decade DT St. Paul could be what everyone "remembers" Uptown once was (but never really was).

The Penfield is in the northern part of downtown St. Paul, near 94, away from the river.

"North End" is a neighborhood in Saint Paul, though obviously not what mattaudio was referring to. I'm not sure if there's a specific definition, but this site has one blob on a map bounded by Dale Street, Larpenteur Ave, I-35E, and BNSF's southerly line through town (Midway Subdivision): http://www.neighborhoodlink.com/District_6_Planning

I believe the correct term for the area is "North Quadrant."

A building across from the Penfield, on the east side of Robert St, now has its front torn off and plywood covering the windows. Anyone know what's going on here?

I'm curious as well. The City's permit/property info page indicates it's a $625,000 project but is not clear for what really.
