Central Exchange - (773-785 University Avenue)

Postby Tcmetro » July 20th, 2012, 9:55 am

Redevelopment at Grotto and University, 30-45 units.

Anyone know what's going on with this project? Last I saw, three buildings have been demolished and graded, but the Oriental Market is still standing, and perhaps open.

I think it's pretty cool, again will definitely depend on material usage. Definitely increases the density and urban feel of University, and continues it east, not as much has been proposed East of Lexington.

Yeah, I like this too. It's the same architectural firm who did Frogtown Square a few blocks to the east at Dale. I think that turned out ok, so I'm hopeful. That stretch between Dale and Lexington is such a hodgepodge of drab, rehabbed, rundown, and gone.

I kinda of see some of the Art Deco of the Old Homes Factory that is east of Lexington there on University with the 2 towers (the large verticles windows) and the cornices at the top of the buildings.

There is talk of putting an addition of apartment onto the back and reuse the factory also for housing!

Found this render on the Model Cities website (correct me if this isn't new or current). I really like the way this looks!

Oh wow, that looks great! I really like the green (a patina hopefully?) accents between the windows. Greets the street really well with good retail spaces!

I love this thing so much. If it looks even half as good as the renderings, it should be a real gem for University. Old Home architects, please take note of how to modernize art deco properly!

should upgrade those old cobra lamps. they look like they should be running along a highway, not an urban transit corridor.

Here is a pdf overview of the two developments Model Cities is pursuing. It includes both the Central Exchange and the BROWNstone building, which Model Cities currently occupies.

http://www.modelcities.org/wp-content/u ... rview1.pdf

They incorporate similar elements, and really play off the art deco that's prevalent in the area. I hope these look as stunning as they do in the renderings. More info on the residential portions:

Now would the BROWNstone redevelopment have happened without the Victoria station? I would guess it would have been smaller if it happened at all.

I think these will be great with included green space. At least it seems like they know how to do fauxstoric architecture, unlike the people behind the Old Home Dairy Expansion...
