On the one hand, that would make for a pretty good proof of concept for paid park and rides, if people used it as such. On the other, I don't think that many people would. St. Paul hasn't reacted terribly well to paid parking recently.

Ah yes, the classic argument that absolutely any investment in transit, biking or walking is nothing less than an all-out war on the mode of transportation that would still receive essentially all of our government's transportation investment. The horror!

Nick Rogers spoke at a Rotary Club meeting this morning in Chanhassen and it sounds like renderings are a couple weeks away. They are in the mindset that they want to release what will be built.

I drive through the snelling/ university intersection nearly every day and have been trying to figure out how this intersection can be modified to become more pedestrian friendly as the area changes. The biggest problem that will need to be fixed is access to the lrt station and the new A line. There are consistently people "jaywalking" across snelling between university and spruce tree as well as jumping over the barrier to the eastbound LRT station from the south side. The barrier problem could be fixed by moving the crossing from the perkins down to the mcdonalds. Crossing from the 84/A line to the LRT seems to have more car interference when going from southbound 84 to westbound LRT. At some point i think pedestrian crossings will have to be separated from traffic, but i have no idea if this is desired or feasible. Anybody have thoughts on what should/will be changed for transit in this area?

Is it possible to install a below-grade pedestrian crossing without disturbing traffic or LRT operation?

Bridges could probably be built without major traffic/LRT impacts. Not so sure about a tunnel. The bigger problem I see is vertical circulation. The split platforms at Snelling are only about 11'-12' wide. If you assume a bare minimum, say, five foot wide staircase, that's already half the platform. If, as seems likely, you need an elevator... The vertical circulation setup at West Bank looks about as narrow as you could get it, and that's more like 16'-18' wide. I just don't see how you can do it.
