Yep, they really ruined what used to be a pedestrian wonderland: https://goo.gl/maps/mWyJGyiV5C12
Well, at least Pizza used to be spelled right. 8-)

Seriously, though, I'd much rather cross one lane of traffic in each direction, buffered by parking (that tends to slow drivers down), rather than the seriously car-centered, two-lanes-in-each-direction stroad that was put in.

The Sun Sailor has some coverage about the outrage over 54 units of apartments.

Pick your excuse, there are quotes for nearly everything in there.

Ridgedale is going to build an out building for a handful of restaurants. Image

Not surprised they're filling up a corner of unused parking. Am a little surprised it wasn't residential though.

Minnetonka Area – General Topics

Miguel Otárola on the beat reporting about the neighborhood opposition to the "affordable" proposal at the west end on Mainstreet on the Minnetonka side of the border.

http://www.startribune.com/minnetonka-a ... 418451963/

Fun how the council was a bit bewildered that folks were all upset that they never knew about this coming, when all that has happened so far are concepts. This IS the early stages still, barely begun.

The Minnetonka planning commission had one sitting member speak in passing that, "you're right, this will harm property values for neighbors", and haven't stopped citing it as a reason to oppose, only adding fuel to their outrage.

The outrage over a 3-story structure and the excuse that it's "out of scale" with the area is ludicrous and an obvious cover-up for what the real issue is: diversity/lower-income housing. I swear that even if the developer lops off one floor it won't make one iota of difference to the neighbors who really fear change, not traffic or height. These people should be ashamed of themselves for trying to shoot this down. Maybe when I become a homeowner I'll change my tune and not want affordable housing built anywhere near my home, but right now the notion that this will dramatically alter the lives of the neighbors in this area seems ridiculous to me and looks like an excuse to be overtly prejudiced (though at least a handful of residents flat out argued that they don't want low-income housing, and didn't try to pin their disdain on traffic or height/scale).

By the way, I frequently drive through this area to/from work and if the development of a 3-story apartment building drastically alters my commute, I'll eat crow.

There are two property owners whose back yards are literally next to this, so I can sympathize with them. But everyone else I'm having difficulty.

I wish this had a ground floor retail or office, I wish the roofline was flat. But this is mostly acceptable to me.

The rage continues over the 54 units of affordable apartments on Shady Oak.

http://sailor.mnsun.com/2017/04/10/deba ... e-housing/

The redesign came to a change in massing, lowering the roof line a smidgen, and making the side profile as slender as an average home.

I wish the design had widen sidewalks on Shady Oak and walk up units.

Of note, reporting finally included some of supporters of this project. There are quite a few, though still out numbered in comparison.

78 unit apartments proposal next to 169, near Cedar Lake Road, delayed until the developer can work with the city staff and engineering to get it to fit the steep sloped heavily wooded site better. Particularly towards preserving more of the mature trees.

http://sailor.mnsun.com/2017/07/17/minn ... -proposal/

I hope Minnetonka can do a better effort at pedestrian accommodation from the apartments further back and Cedar Lake Road, which is getting the higher frequency bus route upgrade. All in all a pretty shameful effort connecting these apartments to the bus stops.

Shady Oak Road development continues to bring out some of the worst in complaints. Now down to 49 units of $800-1200 rents. The design seems to have ditch the sloped roof.

http://sailor.mnsun.com/2017/08/23/shad ... -backlash/

A neighbor claims to be worried for the welfare of the new residents of this super dense building, “I feel sorry for the people that are going to live there.

Will no one think of the driveways?! “Let’s not start a precedent here where one driveway can be a home to 49 units. Instead of one house there, that [driveway] is now going to be housing 49 units.

That quote is really weird. Is it better to have 49 driveways?! Seems like a nice enough project, although I'd prefer less surface parking.

Another article about Shady Oak Crossing getting tweaks. There are some useful before/after images for comparison how this would change to look of Hopkins’ Mainstreet.

Vote was on Sept 7th and the Minnetonka Planning Commission voted to approve it.

http://sailor.mnsun.com/2017/09/11/shad ... ves-forth/

Good read of standard objections coming around again. Nice to see an amount of reporting given to supporters of the project.

Is there a master plan for this site yet? I feel like something is going to need to focus in on the challenges of walk ability, retail, travel demand and overall lack of a concise central design.

Apartments planned on parking lot near Ridgedale Center
*LOCKED*

Tidbits:
Six-story luxury apartment building for people over age 55 at the southwest corner of the Ridgedale Center parking lot.

High Street Residential, a subsidiary of Dallas-based Trammell Crow Co., has submitted plans for a 168-unit project on a surface parking lot owned by J.C. Penney. The U-shaped building would be built just south of the Firestone auto shop and the J.C. Penney store. The project does not include the actual store.

Interesting. I know MoA & Southdale have been urbanizing their parking for a while; is this the first time Ridgedale has? What about Rosedale?
