Highway 36

Postby karen nelson » January 9th, 2018, 9:28 am

Wondering what peoples thoughts are this - I work near this.

It seems it will reduce accidents and save lives, but seems expensive and bad from perspective of ever developing land along Hadley. They are taking out a business location, Apollo.

Oakdale -New Hadley Interchange Traffic Circles- 36

Postby Anondson » January 9th, 2018, 9:30 am

It’d been posted about over in the Transportation forum’s “Street, Road and Highway Projects” thread.

It seems perfect from a “move drivers smoothly, safely at whatever the cost” checklist.

With 120 and 36 so close and due for grade separation, this seems needlessly, wastefully, and expensively redundant. A responsible plan might have grade separation at Hadley with no highway access but have frontage roads over to a grade separated 120 that had highway access. It would preserve more land for future taxpaying businesses along Hadley.

I wonder if the future for 120 is to remove highway access with a grade separation...

Yeah, it looks horrible from a future development point of view - Oakdale is not that big and this wipes a whole stretch that would have been productively used land.

It seems good at moving cars safely, lousy as built development plan.

For what it's worth, Mills Fleet Farm owns most of that land, and is donating it to MNDOT. They've been intending on doing that for over a decade at this point.

Before the interchange plans firmed up, Fleet Farm was going to build a massive mixed use urban village on the site.

It's the gift that keeps on giving added maintenance expense and VMT in perpetuity! MnDOT would be better to just build a bridge at Hadley but no interchange ramps.

Dang, is that true or sarcasm - that is really missed opportunity for Oakdale if so.

For the money they are spending on this, I can imagine to could have realigned streets and intersections, done an overpass and left Oakdale with sort of grid for traditional development.

Definitely sarcasm, though the waste of space is still unfortunate. Metro transit studied highway BRT on 36 that would've ended here, but it would have probably been just a park and ride (now with complementary roundabouts!) anyways.
