Distracted driving needs to be more than a misdemeanor. When injury or death happens as a result penalties need multipliers. Related, IMO elderly who suffer from memory problems need their license removed.

I saw a young woman driving and texting with her infant in the back on 19th and Riverside yesterday.

This may be off topic, but why is cell phone use while driving not banned in the more dense municipalities like MPLS? I understand that much of the rest of state doesn't support a cell phone ban while driving because the roads are largely wide open. However, I am constantly playing car dodger when I have a walk signal. People driving into the crosswalk, or turning across me while I have the signal. All while on the phone.

I was riding my bike across Washington ave the other night and had a green light. A driver almost t boned me while "stopping" in the cross walk. The car was about 5 feet in front of it. Had a I not screamed at them, they likely would have blown the red. They yelled back that they did nothing wrong because they stopped on the line. they were on cell phone, of course.

Sigh.

* I would consider being whacked by a car a road crime. In fact, I've been hit by a car while walking before. Ambulance ride and all.

Wow. I thought all states had banned cell phone use while driving years ago. I can't believe it's still allowed.

Maybe I'm mistaken? I know texting while driving is outlawed, but talking is not.

I thought all cell phone use was limited to hands free devices. I thought everything else was illegal.

Breakdown by state

I cannot believe how many states still allow cell phone use. Absolutely asinine.

Montreal, where device use and turning right on red are banned, is a seriously pleasant place to walk.

17th st and 11th ave, just 2 blocks from my condo. A guy jumped out from between 2 parked cars waving a gun and I just revved the engine and he jumped out of the way

Pretty sure there's a bus stop there.

Yes there is. There is also a freeway, some apartment buildings, and an assisted living facility. There Are many things near there. It is a neighborhood.

And thus extremely dangerous.

A Lyndale Ave makeover can't wait for the next routine reconstruction project.

That stretch of Lyndale is incredibly poorly lit. For cars and peds. I'm (obviously) not blaming the victim here, just pointing out something I notice every time I drive that stretch of Lyndale. No stoplights at 25th and 27th means little in the way of road lighting, and there are no pedestrian scale lights whatsoever in this stretch. I understand that people live along Lyndale here without much setback from the roadway and probably appreciate the darkness, but there for sure has to be a minimum lighting standard for a county road that is not being met here...
