A 10 year planning period is really a long time. 10 years from beginning of AA to opening is much more reasonable, and really should be considered a maximum.

It's not even a ten-year planning period--it's ten more years! It's already been more than five years since the city requested a rail study for the corridor. Is the local planning process really that different from the federal one? Was there work we could or should have been doing in the last five years to prepare for the environmental review and the federal matching application?

So they do a study to determine the mode of transit and route of transit. They bring about 6 alternatives to the public, the public weighs in, and then the county chooses the LPA. Which for this project is a Modern Streetcar(basically light rail) running via West 7th and Highway 5, connecting with both Blue and Green Line.

There's a portion on W. 7th (around Smith Ave, I believe) that will run in mixed traffic, since the neighborhood refuses to give up their precious street parking.

The next step of the project will consider the technical feasibility of using the CP Spur, which IMO would allow for TOD on both sides of the line between Victoria Park and Sibley Plaza.

They speak for upper middle class white people, they don't represent the diversity of Ramsey county or the priorities of Ramsey county. I would suggest not clicking on this article and giving them views.

What would you suggest instead? Cause they noted that building lightrail would have only shaved a minute off the running time.

2 things:

1) Let them do the environmental review before we just worrying about the environment.
2) This is not a streetcar, can we please call it a LRT project. Ramsey county knows that it is....

Gotta call it a streetcar, though, or Highlandites can't pretend they're a picturesque village instead of a neighborhood in a city.

I wonder how much of the "streetcar" designation is simply trying to avoid the stigma surrounding current LRT projects.

As much as I'd love to put "old" blue line LRT vehicles and label it as "street car line" since it's in a car traffic lane, however seems more logical to just use buses and combine it with the Red line. Even if that means the Red line looses the Ed, and just becomes the R Line. (as it be a rapid bus line instead) I'd be at peace with that. Even if the all the busses don't go all the way down to the tiny apple transit station! Outside of rush hour.

Thought maybe I'm talking about slapping more expensive paint on an old worthless failed red barn. Could be, or could be the paint is just enough to keep it standing against a few more guests of wind. hah!

hmm I might be keeping an eye on this.
Also the article got me wondering, did TCRT have any significant stops/station buildings at or near Fort Snelling? Cause if there was one it might be a little neat if they could recreate it with some added amenities.

They did have streetcar stops inside the (at the time, much larger) fort, but no big stations. Of course, the bridge that carried them was much farther east than the current one; it was almost to the pentagon north central tower. And, the walls and most of the original buildings of the "historic" fort were no longer there.
