Might have helped if the article had taken one sentence to note that turnstiles cannot possibly
work on an at-grade system where you can just walk down the tracks and hop onto the platform.

Probably not though.

Makes me wonder what the evasion rates are for MnPass. I bet it's comparable.

Amazing articles! I SO wish we still had real journalism, instead of sensationalized click bate stories. It's so so sad. Thank you for sharing!

Has there been any updates on the new Metro Transit app that's been talked about?

Wasn't there something in the planning reports about a new bus garage for North Minneapolis? Located up here?

New app is here, I guess?

Strib tweeted that saying it's available today, but it's not in Google Play and nothing on Metro Transit website, but maybe sometime today?

This is a fantastic idea--if implemented well. I know dozens of people who would utilize this.

EXCEPT: The $4.50/2 ticket minimum purchase is going to kill it. Absolutely kill it. I don't understand how that's an acceptable solution. WHO BUYS 2 TICKETS TO RIDE THE BUS?? Basically, the only time this is useful is if you're traveling with someone else and willing to buy their ticket for them. Otherwise it's absolutely not more convenient than current options. Can't believe that minimum requirement. The different fare prices are also dumb and make the system confusing, but that's not as bad of a problem, imo.

Worse: it's two rush hour fares. So it's useful if you're traveling with someone else and buying their ticket for them but only at specific times of the day.

Edit: Upon reading more closely, it doesn't even get rush hour fares right. It charges $2.25 for the entirety of the work week, and $1.75 on weekends.

Sounds like someone had a bonus riding on getting this released in the first week of November.

Credit card/Paypal processing fees are probably the reason for the all day rush hour rate and the $4.50 minimum.

Also, from the google play page linked in the strib article - "Pay a single fare or multiple fares for a group of riders, and store multiple tickets on your phone for future use."

Oh, I'm sure you're right. It's still a detriment to the system, though. Although--there aren't similar restrictions on using a credit card at an LRT stop, so not sure what the discrepancy is.

That's good to hear. Still not as convenient for a one-off use type thing (e.g. tourists/visitors), and essentially makes this a more expensive/slightly more convenient variation on go-to cards.

Hopefully the app itself is well put together and useful in terms of real-time updates and routing info.

Strange that it's not compatible with the GoTo accounts, right? They're building up a completely independent system for this?

I just downloaded it, and here are the ticket price options:

Weekday (2.5 hours): $2.25
Weekend (2.5 hours): $1.75
All-day pass: $4.50

Not sure why the $1.75 fare is called "weekend."

aaaand the trip planning tools are just the mobile version of NexTrip. That's disappointing.

I just downloaded it, and was unable to create an account. I tried more than one user name and password. It said there was an error creating the account, and to check that everything was correct, but it didn't specify what the problem was...

I was able to use the same log-in information that I use for adding money to my go-to card on the MetroTransit website.
