Open Streets Minneapolis

Postby mulad » November 16th, 2012, 2:48 pm

Open Streets Minneapolis, which has had some ciclovia-type events in 2011 (once) and 2012 (twice) will have four next year (2013) thanks to a grant from Blue Cross Blue Shield and the official participation of the City of Minneapolis (the previous events have been independently organized so far). Here's an announcement from the Minneapolis Bicycle Coalition:

“Every year when I have these conversations with City officials, they’re always asking me how they can do less,” said [Open Streets organizer] Rasmussen.

Great writeup by Henry Pan about the current state of Open Streets. Half a million bucks annually to keep things going seems like a no-brainer for the city to chip in considering how many people come from outside the city to attend.

Is that $500k for the entirety of the contract or for one year?

My read of the piece is it costs $500k each year to put on 8 quality events. Would be great to add back downtown, NE and (especially) Nicollet and a second fall Lyndale event, but that's probably another $500k for additional Open Streets staff required etc.

That cost can't be correct or is wishful thinking given that the entire organization's revenue for all their programs was less than that per their last published 990. Their entire revenues in 2019 were $448k

I wonder if that includes all the city costs? Additional public works, MPD, barriers, waste pickup, etc. I've noticed the events are getting smaller lengthwise, which I personally prefer vs. quarter mile streches of nothing between nodes of activity.
