did anyone make it to Surly's yet? it was crazy busy. I drove by but didn't go in, were lines of people. it's much larger than I anticipated.

I went on opening day, partially just to see how crazy it was. Didn't disappoint, well, except the ridiculous wait times and shoulder-to-shoulder (mostly white male) people packing that place wall to wall.

They don't have the upstairs open for serving alcohol until the spring they said, which has to be losing them thousands per day. Something about the liquor license I think?

Some Prospect Park NIMBY probably escalated concerns that there would be too many Students and Renters (and Bears, Oh My!) drinking there.

I'm assuming the taps just aren't set up yet. They were selling cans of Abrasive Ale upstairs Friday night. Literally the greatest thing ever.

Now that this has been open for several months, I think it's safe to declare a resounding success. Can't wait until the outdoor seating is set up.

I'll hold of on calling it a success, mainly because I haven't been able to go and try it myself, mainly because its just ridiculously busy all the time. So yeah, pretty much a success.

I have a $10 gift card burning a hole in my pocket. Really need to check this out ASAP. How's the food? Any recommendations?

The food is great. Both the cheese and meat places are awesome. The brussel sprouts are crazy... can't go wrong, but it is a little spendy. I can't really imagine trying to go there on a weekend as I'm sure it's literal insanity but pick a weeknight or something.

Well, there's no way Surly beats out 3Floyds for the regional finals. Let's just say I'd be shocked.

I went on some Monday holiday (Presidents' Day, I think? I have no clue why we had the day off) and it was thankfully not overwhelming.

The beer was great (a lot of stuff I had never tried and I had pretty much stopped drinking Surly) and we ended up staying so long that we needed to get dinner. Wow, that was fantastic food.

And honestly, it's one of the most impressive-looking buildings inside and out in the area.

Brewer's Table closing in August!

http://www.startribune.com/surly-to-clo ... 425387733/
Some cooks of mine left to go work in that kitchen. I got the impression that Brewer's Table was intended as a loss leader to build Surly's brand, and especially their taproom's brand as a dining destination. Based on what I heard, it sounded like they never even tried to make the upstairs profitable. Their regular restaurant must be doing well enough that they want the extra revenue from serving profitable food upstairs. People are seeing this closing as a sign of crisis but I think it is more the case that it has served its purpose and is no longer necessary.

Based on the seemingly endless crowds downstairs, I bet they won't have a problem making the square footage profitable.

Many weekends it still seems to be a 2-hour wait for a table. Pretty crazy, especially given how large the space is.
