Wow, I was right. Espresso Expose has been dying off for a while now, but I could see Big 10 moving to Dinkytown. Recently vacated Chilly Billy or that BBQ place.

I really hope Big 10 relocates somewhere near by so I don't have to walk any further than I already do to get there lol

I could also see Big 10 moving to one of the empty spaces in WaHu. Like Grant said, Espresso Expose will probably just go gentle into that good night.

Espresso Expose and Purple Onion are (I think) owned by the same group, so that business would still live on in a way.

They've very obviously given up on one of them. Espresso Expose has shorter hours, fewer outlets, wobbly chairs and tables and the wifi is usually down.

I have yet to find a coffee shop I love near the U. Closest I can find is Espresso Royale in Dinkytown.

Something not often said: I love the podium on this building.

"fewer outlets, wobbly chairs and tables, and the wifi is usually down" sounds like you're describing Anderson Hall

Anyway, I really hope this building goes thorough to completion. There's not a single aspect about it (so far) that I dislike

There is very little not to like about this building, I especially think the retail fronting University is great. One of the very small changes I would like to see a splash of color somewhere on the tower. It doesn't have to be a massive use or super in your face, just a slight splash of something. While I think the tower is great but slightly cool and bland with all the blue and grey dominating the facade.

Confirmed Espresso is getting bought out, but the Big 10 co-owner denies talks with Harbor Bay and said there are no plans to move.

The comments on that article are just insufferable. Will there ever be one that isn't???

I am SO tired of this "density" thing that the city is endorsing. Why does every neighborhood have to change, to look the same? All character is then lost.
I'm dying at this comment

This is going to be a really nice project if all goes as planned.

I think there's some conflict going on as to what's a worthwhile comment, based on repetition, and context. Seems a few people are getting into the habit of calling each other out. One of the reasons it would be nice to have a -1 option or a like option on the forum.

I would apologize for it, however I've noticed that there seems to be a recurring theme of hostility by some older members toward newer posters. This stems from some more than others... This isn't a sentiment that I share alone either. I've received some private messages actually apologizing for the comments of others and warning me of other members.

So yesterday HPA presented this to the CoW, and now I'm even more excited than when it was first proposed. They seem like they really want to focus on the ground level making sure it will be active and attractive. Seating, ground lighting, and planters were all mentioned. HPA seems like they have a good history with designing high rises that turn out well, so I'm trusting them to do the same on this one. I wish I could share the final rendering that they shared, but I didn't take a picture. Hank Long from F&C was there so maybe he was able to get his hands on it.

I hate everything about this project if we lose Bun Mi and Village Wok. I love everything about it if those two stay and don't raise their prices. I'm ambivalent if they stay but raise their prices.

In general, developers would do themselves so many favors with the public if they would help (or at least try) to relocate beloved independent businesses. I don't expect them to guarantee spaces in the development (due to higher rent, forcing the business to close for 2 years, etc.) - but at the very least they could help Bun Mi find a comparable space nearby (and help with relocation costs, rent gap, etc.) I believe this would blunt a lot of the opposition that flares up in these displacement situations, particularly around Stadium Village and Dinkytown.

Yes, developers would get much goodwill for doing such a thing.

But at the end of the day, people holding up Bun Mi as a "beloved long-time pillar of the neighborhood" seems ridic when their website says they opened in 2009. Things change, and the beloved local places of Stadium Village a decade from now will be quite different than the ones of today or a decade ago.
