Huh. I guess now if someone complains about how it's causing a problem, the University can point to that letter as having been against it? Odd.

I hope this project actually starts up promptly once they kick the tenants out and they don't just faff about for a year letting it sit empty and desolate like Village Green is doing with the Handicraft Guild building.

Which other businesses will they be kicking out?

Everything on that block that isn't in the other new building. Abdul's Afandy, Village Wok, Big 10, Bun Mi, Espresso Expose, and anything else I'm forgetting.

There's no shortage of empty retail space in Stadium Village, and I can think of at least two in Dinkytown (Chilly Billy's and Baldy's). Curious if any will move? It'd be nice to see some of the small, independent businesses make it work in the newer developments.

Chilly billy's is gone. I used to go there all the time. It was packed. Why did they leave?

When you compare the square footage of the commercial areas being lost, to the square footage of the first floor commercial space being added, how do the numbers stack up?

I think the owner just wanted to move to Duluth. They opened a second location there a couple years ago, both were open for a while, and then the Minneapolis location closed unexpectedly. Duluth location is still open according to Facebook.

I am curious when Big 10 and Abdul's Afandy will leave. I ate at Big 10 2 days ago and when I asked my waiter about the apartment building he claimed they had no plans to move or close and had not even gotten an offer from the developer to buy out the rest of their lease which goes for another 3 years. Hopefully he was mistaken and this will start quickly so the building doesn't sit mostly vacant for a long time.

I was there about a month or so ago and asked the same thing and got the same answer, the guy didn't even seem like he knew what I was talking about. Very strange, although Big 10 is the same place that will sell you a lettuce hoagie.

Sam Black just said on Twitter that construction starts in about a month.

I've never worked at a restaurant, so take this for what it's worth, but I've heard that it's pretty standard in that business to keep an impending closure secret from your employees as long as possible, or they'll all jump ship ASAP and you'll be left without a staff for your last couple weeks.

Also, remember that Village Wok is/was the owner of this property. If they're packing up, it's a pretty good sign that construction is imminent.

A DELICIOUS lettuce hoagie, I might add.

Given Bun Mi's massive business, I can't imagine they wouldn't be able to make a move. Village Wok, not so sure. They're the kind of place that succeeds because their costs are low and their prices are low. Which isn't a bad thing - I eat there about as much as I eat at Bun Mi, which is at least once a week.
