Big 10 is the same place that will sell you a lettuce hoagie.
A DELICIOUS lettuce hoagie, I might add.
No kidding. In my opinion, their Assorted sub is the best sub out there. So good!

Just looked at the plans. I'm curious to how the bike parking on the upper floors of the parking garage will work. With each floor all the way up to 6th or so having a bike storage room accessible from the parking garage and interior hallway, they're either going to have folks biking down the garage or taking the general purpose elevator. I can see the property management company now putting up signs prohibiting both activities, as bikes in elevators and common hallways tend to ding up common finishes and drip nasties all over and biking the garage is viewed as dangerous. Just an observation.

Big Ten is closing shop. I hope they will resurrect themselves in this new construction or elsewhere in S.V.

Yep, so this project is happening. I hope nothing delays it after the tenants move out.

Big Ten seems like the kind of thing that could survive in another location, even if a more expensive space (like Sally's) or further from the core of campus, if the owners were so inclined. It kinda sounds like they aren't. If it's the same ownership group for decades, they're probably getting close to retiring, much like the Village Wok family. Unfortunately for Big Ten, they weren't able to cash out as they don't own the building.

I must go back for one last lettuce sandwich before it's too late.

Just an FYI there is another big 10 in Hopkins for all of our lettuce hoagie dreams.

Huh. This article says that Village Wok and Bun Mi are thinking about moving back in after construction. All hope may not yet be lost.

And Big 10 apparently had 3 years left on their lease, so I'm sure they got a nice pile of money in a lease buyout because of this.

For all the buzz about Big 10, I've never seen it that full other than game times, when it's filled with people old enough to have grand kids at the U. I think it's one of those local brands at the U where students in the past developed a strong relationship with it but as time went on new students aren't developing relationships with it so they're relying more and more on nostalgia business than serving the current student body.

This gives them a perfect opportunity to fade into the night and focus on Hopkins where that nostalgia brand has more power.

I don't know, my friends and I went to trivia there every Thursday night for a long time (3x champeens!), and I'd say we have fondish memories. I'm seeing at least as much hate for Big Ten closing as Village Wok (if not more) in my Facebook feed. Maybe that's due to all the marching band nerds who have a greater affinity for it than your average student? I kinda feel like given Big Ten's apparent lease (and hopeful buyout?) and the fact that this development has been publicly known for over a year that they'd have had the ability and money to find a new place. Assuming they want to.

I know I beat the drum up thread, but there's a really good case for zoning a few blocks surrounding the Dinkytown core and even the SFH area of Stafium Village to allow commercial uses so small places like his at least a chance of relocating to a cheap space.

Anyone have any idea what the price per sq ft is for rental space in the new buildings compared to the older stock? You wouldn't think it would be all that different, and if any of these really wanted to come back or move, they certainly could make it work.

One of the neat things about this project is that they divided it into four relatively small retail spaces rather than doing one huge one and holding out for a Dave and Buster's in the late 2020s. You can assume rents will be higher than they were before, but size is one of the reasons we end up with a lot of vacant commercial spaces in new projects.

Startrib article mentions Village Wok will be "the only current restaurant likely to survive" ... "expects to reopen in the new building in 2018"http://www.startribune.com/building-mad ... 390767691/

I'm picking up my textbooks this week and will have to make one final visit to Big 10. Sad to see it go.

Made my last visit to Big 10 Sunday. They said they're paying $29 / mo rent now and the new building is asking $60.
