Have not been by in awhile, but when I was last by the demolition looked like it was finally finished and they were about to start the rebuild.

Still wish I'd been able to graduate in here instead of Mariucci.

This misguided renovation is already 5 million over budget.

They're tacking quite a bit onto the back of the building here.

Not misguided at all. Beautiful building on the historic campus mall. The best part of the "U".

The interior offices and band space was hideous as well, very bad condition inside the building.

I was in band at about the latest time we were housed in Northrop (missed TCF by just a couple years...). I wouldn't say it was hideous inside by any stretch. It was a music library, instrument repair area, uniform storage, instrument locker, and stage to practice on. The offices seemed more than fine, with the uniform area being the only one that was noticeably too small. They were all old looking but I loved it, spent a lot of time in the old rooms and it was cool to know how many people had passed through.

Now, the locker space for changing before/after games... terrible. The guys got a locker room (cramped) while the females got to change in a hallway. Without a doubt the biggest upgrade the bandos received.

I'll also say I loved that indoor practices were in the heart of campus.. made it easy to get to by 4:15 from any class I had. TCF is a bit on the fringe, especially if you're coming from West Bank.

MinnPost had a brief little blurb today about the Northrop renovation. Some good details:
First came a report on the status of the renovation/revitalization, begun in February 2011 and scheduled for completion in Spring 2014. In a nutshell, the new Northrop will have three times as much public space as before, three balconies instead of one, better sightlines, better sound, more bathrooms (here the audience cheered), a better space for the pipe organ (but no budget yet to restore it), a second lecture/performance space (170 seats), and an architecturally sensitive addition that deepens the stage and allows for crossover. Eighty percent of the seats will be within 100 feet of the stage, up from 20 percent in the old configuration. Happily, the proscenium arch is still there, with the damaged parts under repair; sadly, the great chandelier is in storage and waiting for a new home.

Now that this appears to be nearing completion, does anyone know when they plan to turn the carillon back on? When they began construction and turned it off, I noticed that something was missing but it took me awhile to realize that it was the bells that were absent. There's something stately and academic about hearing those bells every 15 minutes.

^Bummer! I always enjoyed them, they were functional in letting you know as you walked to class if you were on or behind schedule, and have the classic tune. Will they return?

Northrop is getting some kind of cafe, but they can't say what it is yet. It also has an opening date set (finally)- April 4:

Does anyone know what the layout on the west side of Northrop is going to be? Many of the walks and paths there are all torn up; a new curb cut was installed along Pleasant near the rear of Northrop, and the old curb cut is being removed. I seem to recall plans for some sort of transit layover facility in the area where Wesbrook once stood, but I don't think I've ever seen an official plan or document to that effect.

Feats of Engineering: Northrop re-engineered from the inside out
http://finance-commerce.com/2013/11/fea ... z2jygGUjIJ
Structural engineering project manager Murphy Curran describes the project as something akin to “building a ship in a bottle” because it requires hundreds of pieces to be placed perfectly inside a space with limited access.

Specifically, six Meyer Borgman Johnson engineers had to figure out how to install larger foundation columns under Northrop, how to reinforce the auditorium roof and how to replace the old, vibration-prone steel balcony with three smaller, concrete balconies.
Apparently the solution required demolishing a historic building 30 feet away.

That building needed to go, it was damp and moldy inside, partly because it was so close to Northrop
