Not sure what warrants the comparison between the Metro Jacksonville author and me, but here's my Linkedin page for the fun of it:

I just picked a random poster. Perhaps he is the Jacksonville John. I should have considered the alliteration.

That's an awesome business concept. Things like this can be named with a locale. "New York-style pizza ... Kansas City BBQ", folks might say "I went down to the corner coffee shop and paid for my Saint Paul-style" meaning a lifetime subscription for a beverage? Or something...

Minneapolis has once again been awarded the best park system in the country by the trust for public land. Beat NYC by 9 points.

130 delegates from Charlotte have been in the Twin Cities studying our transportation network among other things. Here's an interesting article that appeared in the Charlotte Observer regarding the Super Bowl:

Another article talks about our bicycle infrastructure:

So basically Charlotte has Minneapolis envy in the same way Minneapolis has Seattle envy.

The octogenarian on my neighborhood board made a comment about citywide organics collection to Elizabeth Glidden the other night, noting we're behind Seattle. It was precious.

Seattle envy is about the only way I can see to justify citywide organics collection.

Care to explain why? Seems like an excellent idea to me - it gets significantly more stuff out of the waste stream than yard waste and food scrap composting alone.

I've got a stereotype in my head where the only people that would really want organics collection are the kind of people that think "green" means having a lot of green space in their yard, so they'd be better off composting it themselves. Either way, seems like a lot of trucking around when you can just compost it yourself. I think on a neighborhood level, volunteers could collect organic waste from people who can't compost (live in an apartment)/don't want to, and distribute it to neighborhood gardens.

I'd think the CO2 emissions of a city wide collection program would vastly outweigh the gains of putting that carbon back into the soil (especially when you could do almost as much on a neighborhood level with less CO2 emissions).

I thought this was the case too, but it's not. Organics composting, as planned, will collect a significant amount of stuff that wouldn't compost in a backyard even under the best circumstances such as meat/bones/greasy boxes/etc.

Because it involves running a third heany truck burning diesel through every blessed alley in the whole city so we can, what, divert organic material (which would burn very well at HERC and generate electricity and steam) and turn it into dirt? I totally understand why recycling is important and has real value, but this organics collection strikes me as nothing more than a feel good fool's errand with doubtful real environmental benefit.

Also, there's no way I've got room for a third giant bin in my alley.

Looks like Target Center is going to be going after the Women's Final Four, WNBA & NBA All Star Games. This next decade is going to be busy for sports. 2014 MLB All Star Game, 2015 Stanley Cup Finals :D, 2016 PGA, 2017/2018? WNBA All Star Game, 2018 Super Bowl, 2019/2020? Men's Final Four, 2019-2022? NBA All Star Game, and 2021? Womens Final Four. Maybe we can squeeze an NHL All Star Game in there too. Sure is better then what we used to get. Such as... "The Upper Mississippi River Valley Youth Girls Regional Volleyball Tournament-Blue Division".
