Well and it's not just commuting costs that could be a factor, but also: time (hard to put a price on free time, but it's at least as valuable as your effective hourly wage rate), utility costs (higher with more SF), home/yard maintenance costs, taxes (could be higher if more services are spread among fewer residents....ala low density), safety (risk of car accidents a bigger threat than hand-to-hand violence in most places), carbon footprint (social costs more than individual), etc.

Possibly true for some, though "suburb" doesn't necessarily equal "big house". I live in a 1000 sq. ft. townhouse without its own yard, for example. My utility costs are very low, and some of what I pay in association dues goes towards common area maintenance, but I don't have to spend time mowing it each week or clearing out the gutters. And when I worked downtown, I almost never drove and took transit.

I personally think this is the biggest "forgotten" element of renting vs. owning. If I'm renting, I don't have to worry about finding the money to pay the repairman if the hot water heater breaks, or the A/C goes on the fritz, or if the oven stops working. I call up the maintenance line (or, I guess in my case, fill out the request form online) and they come out and figure it out and fix it. I also don't have to worry about shoveling the sidewalks or driveways, mowing the lawn, cleaning the gutters, or any of those maintenance issues. I can just go home and relax.

I'm in WBL!

There is a GREAT bus from Maplewood Mall. Every 10 mins during rush! $76 pretax for Metropass. If your coworkers are driving, they are doing it wrong.

My wife teaches in Shoreview and we wanted to be in a neighboring suburb so our neighbors are not the kids she's teaching. We love that WBL has character and a small downtown that we frequent often.

Ryder Cup is coming back to Hazeltine in 2028. This is the first time an American course has hosted for a second time. AND only 12 years apart! WOW

The Army wants the headquarters near universities and technology companies, and has said that the host city should have workforce expertise in biomedicine, chemistry, computer hardware and software, electronics, materials and mechanical systems.

“Quality of life for ... personnel and their families is also a priority for recruiting and training top talent,” the Army said in the letter to Frey. “ ... In particular, it is helpful for us to have an appreciation of the community’s level of interest and support should a headquarters be placed in its community — we clearly want to be good neighbors from the very start.”
