Nice building. This is light years better than the original proposal across the street.
Re: Huron and Essex Hotel - 501 Huron Blvd SE
Not sure I'm all crazy with the grays and white for the exterior. But I guess that is the current color palette of the moment. But it is a nice clean design.
Re: Huron and Essex Hotel - 501 Huron Blvd SE
It may be worth noting that a good chunk of this hotel is being built in the old railroad ROW. If one envisions that this ROW might someday in the future be used for some kind of a greenway trail extension, this structure will limit how that corridor could eventually be extended into Stadium Village.

At the neighborhood meeting they indicated their awareness of this and willingness to let trail come through.

This looks like it might have started construction. There is a new hole in the ground where this will be going.
Re: Huron and Essex Hotel - 501 Huron Blvd SE
Probably still part of the deconstruction and possible decontamination from old uses. But that is a good sign that this could get out of the ground before winter. This looks like it might have started construction. There is a new hole in the ground where this will be going.

Re: Huron and Essex Hotel - 501 Huron Blvd SE
Wasnt sure where else to post this but I was surprised to see the 3 small 3-story apartment buildings completely demolished today across the street from this future hotel...
Re: Huron and Essex Hotel - 501 Huron Blvd SE
The ones on the Fulton corner? I know the U bought this whole block, but I hadn't heard that they had any actual plans for it yet.
I suppose there were various people who were cranky about the loss of the Ambulatory Care Center parking lot, though, so it'll probably turn into a replacement for that.

Re: Huron and Essex Hotel - 501 Huron Blvd SE
Oh and now I just read in the Biz journal that the U will be using those lots for parking in the short term to hold on to them for future development...
Re: Huron and Essex Hotel - 501 Huron Blvd SE
Question is, will the university spend a few extra bucks to at least make it look somewhat presentable. Will they green it up so that Huron side, which is a major gateway to the U, does not look like an airport park & ride.
Re: Huron and Essex Hotel - 501 Huron Blvd SE
Someone please tell the U that knocking down buildings for parking was last cool over 50 years ago. Doubly bad when we have a housing shortage.
Re: Huron and Essex Hotel - 501 Huron Blvd SE
Most of the U's parking lots are reasonably well-landscaped. I wouldn't be at all surprised if this lot ended up looking pretty close to these.
Re: Huron and Essex Hotel - 501 Huron Blvd SE
Would be nice if they could figure out how to get parking and housing to co exist on this block. Parking on the half block closest to the clinic and housing on Huron.

Re: Huron and Essex Hotel - 501 Huron Blvd SE
It should be illegal to demolish structures to replace with surface parking. Either tear it down and leave it as green space, or leave the buildings up until you're ready to redevelop. U of M - destroyer of neighborhoods?
Re: Huron and Essex Hotel - 501 Huron Blvd SE
Might be more indignant if half the lot wasn't already parking. Hopefully this way we'll get wider sidewalks and nicer landscaping in the meantime.

Huh. The little alphabetical street ordering going on in that part of town had never dawned on me before.
