Re: 36th and Bryant Area
I noticed the stoplight at 35th/Bryant (one block north) was off and a temporary stop sign installed this AM. Does anyone know if this is just regular maintenance or is the city considering removing a highly unnecessary light? AADT on Bryant are somewhere between 1,800 (41st St) & 3,100 (31st St).

Re: 36th and Bryant Area
Seems temporary. As much as they should, I don't think the city is considering removing stoplights along the 35th/36th corridor.
On that note, I had exceptional "green wave" light timing along eastbound 36th St this morning from Dupont to 35W. It's usually not great. 35th going westbound in the evening is worse.
36th Street at Lyndale needs left turn lanes striped, probably for both directions. The lack of left turn lanes to separate turning from through traffic in some places is downright ridiculous, especially when it's just a matter of paint.
Grand & 34th is still the worst, most useless stoplight in the city. I challenge anybody to find one with lower traffic counts.

Yeah, the stoplight on the NE corner was hit and sitting there in a pile...so that explains the stop sign.

Re: 36th and Bryant Area
How about roundabouts on 36th at Lyndale and Nicollet?

Re: 36th and Bryant Area
Definitely worth considering, particularly since the streets are all single-lane in each direction. The ROW impacts would be minor...I don't think any buildings would be touched.
The first thing to look at would be traffic volumes. I'm guessing the AADT on Lyndale greatly exceeds that of 36th, which usually means that it's not a good candidate if it's too "unbalanced". I'm guessing, but could be wrong, that Lyndale gets much more "green" time than 36th. If it's significant, that would bode poorly for a roundabout.
Roundabouts in this corridor would pair nicely with a future "dogbone" interchange at 36th/35W, to replace the existing split diamond at 35th/36th. One of the reasons I was really hoping Richfield had moved ahead with the dogbone at 66th/35W was to offer a local test case for future application at 36th Street. Having a local example to point to (on the same freeway, no less) would help immensely when it comes to doing something innovative at 36th (or 38th, but I think that's less likely due to local opposition...I'm actually quite OK with the freeway interchange staying at 36th and keeping 38th more transit-y urban only)

^Yep. If we had a double dogbone configuration, along with a westbound lane on 36th from 35W to Nicollet, it would solve many problems. The future additional ramps at Lake should also be configured so it's a split diamond with (two way) 28th St and Lake, rather than 31st/Lake, leaving 31st and 26th as calmer crossings without ramp conflicts.

That is 36th and Lyndale, really great prices. Be prepared to probably have to wait in a line at busy times of the day! Which with their prices is almost all day.

Re: 36th and Bryant Area
I'm not sure how they are able to sell regular unleaded consistently 10 cents or more below nearby competitors prices. Not only is it extremely unusual for a gas station to do that, I thought maybe there was some kind of law dealing with that situation...
With them being the only gas station around that immediate area (nearest are the SA's at Nicollet & 35th, Lyndale & 40th, Lake & Aldrich), I would honestly think their location alone would be enough to draw people in. I'm not sure that selling gas for zero to minimal profit is a smart play.
Also, as urbanists, shouldn't we be against someone suppressing local gas prices, encouraging more driving?
Although my last point was intended as a joke, I'm also kind of serious. The traffic jams inside and around this gas station (no doubt caused by their low prices) are a safety hazard to bikes and peds around that intersection. Furthermore, we all know how insanely lizard-brained people are about getting the best price on gas. I PROMISE YOU there are people driving from 5+ miles away to buy cheaper gas here. In whose best interest is that?

Re: 36th and Bryant Area
Pretty much every gas station in the immediate area is overly-congested. While their prices may have something to do with it, I'd argue that the consolidation of gas stations over the last couple of decades has left the area underserved.
Re: 36th and Bryant Area
Probably one out of every three times I go to get gas at the Superamerica on Nicollet & 35th I just drive on past because I'm unwilling to put up with the chaotic unorganized lines waiting at the pump.
Re: 36th and Bryant Area
Is there such thing as a good, urban-friendly gas station? We have so many jarring ones, especially on Hennepin, but maybe that's just how it has to be?
Re: 36th and Bryant Area
The North Loop Holiday isn't awful. The building fronts the street on the corner rather than being behind the parking lot, with a corner entrance. It's not perfect, but its better than Bobby and Steve's, or any of the Hennepin Ave standard gas station layouts.

Re: 36th and Bryant Area
Yeah, pretty much any gas station where the building fronts the street is "good." When I lived on Franklin I stopped into the Holiday near Cedar Ave on my bus commute home, and it was nice to at least have a clear line from the bus stop to the door of the building where I wasn't walking through gas pump drive aisles.
I'd say in general, the less you have to interact with the gas part of a gas station as a non-gas getter, the better.

Re: 36th and Bryant Area
I was once told that gas stations rarely make much profit on gas, but instead on concessions sold inside. Perhaps this station sells so many concessions that they are able to sell their gas for low/no profit, just to get people to come to the station and buy something else.
Re: 36th and Bryant Area
The Bobby & Steve's in EP is actually pretty good, frontage-wise, just in a suburban setting.
