AC Marriott Hotel - 401 Hennepin Ave (Andrews Hotel site)
Re: AC Marriott Hotel (401 Hennepin Ave / Andrews Hotel site
Yeah I think so. That level of depth fools the eye into believing the building has a more substantial and permanent facade, whereas flush windows to me give a paper thin, flimsy, cheap kind of appearance. Like, uh, what's holding that up! Obviously in the past brick and stone held the structure up, In very thick dimensional walls, so we have a built in paradigm that this depth gives strength and structure. So even though construction methods have moved on, that idea hasn't.

Why do they even have a webcam?

I love the homesick Ad right below the Happy Hour sign. That's smart marketing!

From April 18th:
Re: AC Marriott Hotel (401 Hennepin Ave / Andrews Hotel site)
it looks like the entire building is just a big atrium???
Re: AC Marriott Hotel (401 Hennepin Ave / Andrews Hotel site)
Kinda. The building is L-shaped, wrapping around an interior parking lot/dropoff.

Plastic construction protector is coming down. It's kind of like slowly opening a Christmas present...

Just passed this on the bus without its wrapping paper on and man is it dark and flat! Almost looming over the street. Not a fan right now.

They do have those metal pieces giving it some movement, but other than that this is pretty much as expected.

One of the design architects at ESG really wants to bring stucco back. They're doing it here, and they plan on doing it at 800 Washington for the big white part. Maybe downtown should have some design guidelines on that? But I guess it's just a matter of how it's implemented into the design. If it's a large bulk of your building it's not gonna look good.

Stucco is for houses, not 10 story buildings.

I actually don't think it looks too bad in person. That said, it's definitely going to look awful after a few years.

Direct your ire at the city and the developer. Developers (in many/most cases) are going to want to cover their building in the least expensive material allowable by the code. Cement fiberboard manufacturers have made some recent changes to their recommendations/warranties that make it more expensive than it used to be thus bringing stucco into play (financially) - this is the reason why you are seeing so much stucco everywhere. The ONLY way that you will see percentages of stucco (or cement fiberboard) reduced is if the city governs those more strictly. One of the design architects at ESG really wants to bring stucco back. They're doing it here, and they plan on doing it at 800 Washington for the big white part. Maybe downtown should have some design guidelines on that? I've said this in a million threads but I've never been a meeting where an architect said, "Let's use less glass." Or, "Let's use the cheaper/worse material." I've certainly never said it and nobody that I've ever met who loves architecture wants to use materials that aren't great.
Say what you will about ESG but be aware of "the market" and who has ultimate control over the outcomes.

Re: AC Marriott Hotel (401 Hennepin Ave / Andrews Hotel site)
The only reason I even mentioned ESG is because of the meeting last week for 800 Washington. They mentioned using stucco for the large white portion and that their designer likes using the material. I'd be okay with seeing a design regulation that can be enacted if someone tries using stucco for more than 25%(?) of their exterior. Obviously exceptions can be made, but it can finally be the cities excuse to strike down ugly design.
Re: AC Marriott Hotel (401 Hennepin Ave / Andrews Hotel site)
I drove by the hotel at 4:30 today... i was surprised at the exterior... it really reads so flat... kind of disappointing - I know renderings are always 'beauty' shots... the metal vertical bands were very flimsy looking.
