Doesn't look any stranger than the block of houses on the east of the Air Force base crammed between the base, 62, and 55. I imagine these are mostly owned by military families, for whom they're massively convenient.

I think it actually has far more to do with the construction of the Crosstown Hwy than it has to do with the airport. Even though it happened in the early 60s, the Crosstown took out many blocks of existing developed post-war SFH blocks. This, in essence, separated the exclaves on the south side from the contiguous land use to the north. This isn't as big of a deal in areas like 62nd and Bloomington, where a Minneapolis exclave ties right into the SFH grid of Richfield. But it was a much bigger deal elsewhere.

Over time, MAC has bought up significant tracts of land nearly up to the freeways which surround the airport. This includes an entire neighborhood, elementary school, golf course, etc in Richfield east of Hwy 77. This exclave, and the exclave near 43rd Ave, are all that remain near the airport.

Historical image 1960. Looks like Richfield was the real loser along Cedar. Minneapolis, not as much

Actually I find the ones off 28th Ave to be a lot stranger than those east of the base...they're directly under the flight path. The ones east of the base certainly have a lot of noise as well, but they're not directly underneath a flightpath. Furthermore, there's over 100 properties (and many of them duplexes) east of 42nd Ave vs. only ~30 properties off 28th Ave. The point I'm trying to make, I guess, is that it would've nothing for MAC and/or the city to buy up those ~30 properties, had they ever desired to do so.

Southwest schedule extension is out through April 24th.
Seasonal return of MCO, RSW, TPA. And...beginning March 9th, Southwest will fly daily to Las Vegas. Not sure if this is a seasonal or full add.

MCO - Saturday only Spring Break
TPA - Saturday only Spring Break
RSW - looks to be daily for Spring Break
Vegas - 1x daily

On the other end of the spectrum, the small airline Air Choice One is expanding into a couple more cities in Iowa.

Does anybody have any information on the Virgin Atlantic flight #VS9956? It just left this morning from MSP. Could it have been for the Ryder Cup team? It is an A340-600 flying to LHR. However it flew here from JFK last night, think they flew full of passengers to JFK and once the jet was empty loaded more jet fuel and flew empty to MSP?

Most likely was a standard commercial flight from LHR to JFK and then empty to MSP.

It was taking the European Ryder Cup Team back to London. It left around 9:15 this morning.

KLM to resume MSP-AMS in March. Not sure if that means any loss of Delta flights.

DL / KL-AF operate their joint venture metal-neutral. My guess is this will be the third summer frequency to AMS rather than a DL flight which it usually is.

DL has 3 nonstop flights to AMS during the summer.
KLM's would be the 4th.

KLM to resume Minneapolis service to Amsterdam next year
http://www.bizjournals.com/twincities/n ... erdam.html

KLM's service will start on March 27, complementing existing MSP-Amsterdam service already provided by Delta Air Lines Inc., a code-share partner.

KLM will fly to Amsterdam Airport Schiphol on Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays departing MSP at 2:50 p.m. and arriving in Amsterdam at 5:50 a.m. the following day. For the trip back, it will depart Amsterdam at 9:35 a.m. and arrive in Minneapolis at 11:20 a.m.

The press release said these flights will be in addition to the three daily flights that Delta flies between MSP and Amsterdam.

KLM's new flights will use an Airbus 330-200.

Welp, seasonal Rome flight isn't coming back. But the HNL flight is getting closer to all-year service.

As I was grabbing a NiceRide at the 46th St station yesterday, Steve Brandt from the Strib stopped me to ask questions about biking the airport. Apparently there are proposals for improving bike access that he will be writing about.

Yes, they've been discussing that at the monthly MAC meetings. Terminal 2 is already bike-able, and they are looking to make Terminal 1 that way as well.

If Terminal 2 is bikeable, is it possible to get from the bikeable area to the Terminal 2 LRT platform? Ideally when we're rebuilding the roads provisions should be made to allow bicyclists to get to Terminal 1 directly, but if our option is $7 million dollars or have them use LRT from Terminal 2, I say let the light rail take the burden of cyclists to Terminal 1. The LRT between the terminals is free, so there's no additional monetary cost for a bicyclist to take the train that final leg. There's some inconvenience, but I don't think it's quite $7m worth of inconvenience.
