CPM Lake Calhoun Condominiums - 3017-25 East Calhoun Parkway

Postby twincitizen » October 17th, 2016, 7:45 am

CPM Proposes to replace 3 houses on Lake Calhoun with a 3-5 story condo project. It would sit between two existing 3-story apartment/condo buildings. For height comparisons, the site is half a block north of the 5-story Calhoun Shores apartments, and just 200 feet away from the 6-story Edgewater condos.

One of those houses (3025) was the home of Ludwig Harmsen, one of the most prominent musicians in Minneapolis in his day and one of the founders of (what would become) the Minnesota Orchestra.

3025 was constructed in 1904, more than thirty years after the founding of what would become the Minnesota Orchestra when the subject was 65 years old. Designation on the basis the home is associated with a significant figure is unlikely.

Not saying it should be preserved. It's a pretty unremarkable house, at least from the outside. Just noting the history.

^I'm impressed by anyone who owns a Larry Millet book and posts its contents to the internet.

It isn't in any Larry Millett book, at least as far as I know (though just to be sure, I checked his AIA Guide--nada). I had to go and research the property, same as anyone else would. But thanks for the assumption.

Now that I've learned you are modern day Herodotus, I feel bad about rolling my eyes at half your posts.

Not really. No-one cares where a nobody (being a musician in a cow town that would later blossom into a major city doesn't make someone remotely noteworthy)built a retirement home.

By just looking at the City Pages url I thought "Cory Z-Polish-name has to be the author." In a city full of super hot anti-development takes, he's the supernova.

I'm fine with appreciating old buildings. Fish who lived in a very tiny pond, not so much.

Not to rain on your snark parade, but I thought it was interesting information. Certainly interesting enough for a few sentences on this forum.

I'm excited to see more details and a more fleshed out design. I'm a sucker for Snow Kreilich.

whenever we walk by those new townhomes (are they townhomes?) in linden hills my friend scoffs... but I like them.

I understand preserving the areas closest to the lakes to be zoned smaller, but this is one area where I don't feel that's as necessary (another is on the north end of Lake Calhoun).

Think this was circa early 2006 after the controversies of MoZaic, Edgewater, and when Blue was first proposed as a multi-block redevelopment. Think it is also from when Lander was proposing the building on the north side of Lake Calhoun and thus the image with the buildings next to the lake, which I sort of like. As a reference, the anti-development crowd was using "Uptown is not downtown" as a chant and BKV said at a community meeting for the precursor to Blue something very similar to the following: "we're trying to create a third downtown"
