You can get to the LRT platform from the bikeable areas at T2. It's not perfect, but you can walk it or ride right up to the platform. There should really be an underground bike storage facility at T2 connected to the platform where the adjacent construction trailer park is. Considering that is planned to be additional parking ramp in the future it would allow people biking to the airport for work or travel to utilize the LRT and/or bike to the airport.

Adding a cycletrack along 34th Ave to Terminal 2 I can maybe see, but I cannot see it being worth $7MM to wedge a bike trail in along the freeway like that. It would be significantly cheaper to build a big fancy bike facility in the acres of parking at the VA or Fort Snelling and subsidize Metropasses for airport employees. If we are actually super concerned about saving travelers the ~$4 in transit fare to and from the airport, Fort Snelling could probably be added to the airport free ride zone without too much heartache.

Considering that the MAC gets the bulk of it's revenue from parking, opening up that kind of loophole probably wouldn't fly.

Loophole? If anything, the loophole is that parking is FREE at Fort Snelling Park & Ride.

Indeed, I imagine anyone willing to flout the rule against overnight parking at Park and Rides to avoid paying for airport parking is probably already doing it, and isn't being prevented by a few dollars of train fare. (Or, y'know, is just not paying the fare, given the low probability of having your ticket checked in the couple of minutes they'll be on the train.)

Clearly, you missed the intent of Matt's post, which is that no park and ride anywhere should ever be free.

The intent of the access from the $7 million trail is to provide decent access from the north. The existing "official bike access" (taking the lane on 34th Ave S to Humphrey, getting into a parking ramp, finding your way to the LRT platform, then taking the train to Lindbergh) is only accessible to the south, really. It isn't practical to expect Minneapolitans to have to go around three sides of the airport to get in.

However, doing some access from Northwest Drive seems like it must be cheaper. That would provide direct access to Lindbergh. Surely they must have some way for hotel patrons to get into the airport? Seems that simple provision of bike lanes on the improved Northwest Dr would get this a lot closer -- access from the north still outstanding.

The hotel is paying for a dedicated TSA checkpoint that will allow their tenants to enter a new skyway across the access road that will tie in at the end of the C Concourse. So, it's probably theoretically possible, although I doubt the hotel wants their hotel lobby to become a public entrance for the airport.

Grand opening today, 10/20, of additional gates at T-2

Ever since the additional gates have opened I have not seen a single jet use any of the new gates yet. Once more seasonal routes start that may change. SW it seems still only use four gates and SC gets the other six, however needs to let Condor and Iceland Air use two gates when they fly in. Unless they are only using the new gates in the AM or weekends only. Around 1700 just about everyday I see all four SW gates full followed by at least one jet waiting for a gate in the taxiway. I wonder if the passengers ask about the empty gates?

I have wondered the same thing re: new T-2 gates. I'm wondering if the big demand is Winter and then growth will methodically happen spring and beyond. Nothing to base that theory on, but I know winter tends to be busier for Sun Country. Southwest will have its usual seasonal destinations on the weekends as well.

Since airlines like to have all of their gates grouped together for efficiency, there may just be some delays in terms of orchestrating a gradual shift down of operations, as opposed to the airlines opening up a stand-alone gate.

Will have Alaska, Delta, United, and Sun Country on SFO-MSP. Supposedly, Alaska will be twice daily. United uses smaller E175 jets, but will go to larger mainline during the peak summer season.

SFO-MSP on an E175 would probably violate the Geneva Convention.

Honestly, I'd take an E175 that's been refurbished over a larger jet, at least with United's refurbishing. I did E170/175 ATL - DEN - YVR, and between two abreast seating and a bit more leg room with the refurbishing it was one of my most pleasant flights in economy.

Doesn't UA fly SFO-MSP on a CRJ-900? Or at least they have in the past. That's even worse.

No, UA either has the E175s which run 2 a day in winter and shoulder season. The 3 a day schedule is a mix of 2 x E175 and 1 mainline or more rarely 1 x E175 and 2 mainline.

UA doesn't have any CRJ-900s.

The E175 is great, with a high ratio of first:economy it's good for upgrades and at 2:2 in the back comfortable if you don't clear an upgrade.

Just an update on the new T2 gates they are now being used. They only seem to be used by SW airlines at this point.

I also love the 2-2 seating arrangement on the E175s. I got to fly United Plus on an E175 from MSP to LAX. I remembered a really smooth flight.
