1. I wonder if this building is still configured as a data center? Some significant differences in building design between a data center and an office complex. What a waste of downtown real estate, using it for a data center.
2. I wonder what the 66-story Penney's site tower would have looked like.
3. I wonder what Trammell Crow's planned Normandy Inn tower would have looked like.

I have a newspaper clipping of the Normandy Inn development. I believe the larger tower was 50 stories and the shorter one was 30 stories. I'll see if I can dig it up.

I have to believe the hotels around this are licking their chops with this news! I would think they bring in a lot of business travel.

One of the IDS proposals actually spanned over Nicollet Mall and sort of reminded me of one of the towers in Atlanta... it had a lot of step backs around the sides and a series of step up roof heights... a little like the Norwest tower...

Rumor...? 811 LaSalle has had some renovation in the atrium and it will be the new Post Office. Any one seen this reported?

Also, my friend's restaurant in this building had a recent writeup in msp mag.

(feel free to move this if 811 LaSalle has it's own thread)

RBC contemplates moving the firm’s 1,400-employee downtown Minneapolis office

Gist:
The Toronto-based financial firm has put out a request for proposals for 300,000 square feet of office space. Spokeswoman Nicole Garrison said RBC is looking in downtown Minneapolis and in the suburbs and a new home could be in an existing building or new construction.

“It really comes down to what is best for our employees,” she said. “It’s a decision that is not being taken lightly. We are studying mass transit patterns and where our employees are coming from.”

RBC has 1,400 employees in its downtown office. It is the ninth-largest downtown employer, according to the Minneapolis Downtown Council.

Hopefully, the Mayor, Council members and etc. network around to keep them Downtown. When employers like RBC and Cray leave a downtown it's not easy to fill the gap.

+1000.

If they are actually taking mass transit and employee commute times into serious consideration, (and not just providing lip service) it's hard to imagine they could go anywhere but downtown, unless a statistically unlikely percentage of their employees happen to live in a specific quadrant.
Anecdote time: a former supervisor here tried to get her (five-person) group's workspaces moved to the Maple Grove facility, since she lived in Maple Grove and it would have been so nice!, but was convinced to drop the plan when two of her employees reminded her that they lived in Eagan and Woodbury, and such a move would kinda wreck their lives.

Also, seems odd for RBC to kick retail tenants out of their skyway level to build out a branch of their business-focused bank, then immediately make plans to vacate their office.

I wonder if Hines will dust off this plan? Overall vacancy rates are very close to 2008 levels, but I'm afraid the CBD is too high at 17.7% If they can snag a 300,000 sqf client to take a 1/3rd of the building maybe they can get it going with the rest speculative.

If they deem that too risky/not feasible, maybe Hines' next North Loop phase would be a possibility, early plans were for around 500,000 sqf.

Wouldn't Hines probably just finish their dock street buildings? The office portion is right off the light rail lines.

Straying from this a bit, does anyone know if Thrivent is doing some renovations? There's a commercial property permit pulled for their address.

Going back to the news that RBC is looking at moving it's worth noting that the Pohlad Family Foundation, and presumably the family offices in general, are located in RBC Plaza. I'm not saying it's going to have an impact on the Gateway block in anyway but I thought it was worth noting.

I'm really hoping someone has a BizJournal sub and can shed a little light on why the North Loop sucks.

I can almost guarantee it's a whine about parking.

I'd also add that lunch food options are better downtown too.

Man, I don't know how to reconcile all these positive aspects of downtown with the common knowledge that it's a desolate hellscape.

North Loop office space costing more than Baker Center office space might have had a little something to do with their decision as well.
